I have always felt that way as well. However, more and more teams are operating tight to the cap, which is causing the cost of getting out of a bad contract to go up and up (see the Monahan deal for example). As a result, I think going forward, a team has to really pick their spots before pushing harder against the cap.

Teams that consider themselves cup contenders mortgage the future all the time.
Whether you or I feel the Flames are actually a cup contender is largely irrelevant. If the team thinks they are in the next few years, they'll swallow that cost.

They do it in the last few years of your window.

Anyone see the piece on SN where Jesse Puljujarvi tells a Finnish reporter that he thinks the NHL maybe isn’t the place for him anymore? “ Maybe I just don’t have it”.
“20 games in and I have one goal. It’s sad.”

Buy low! I just think they developed him the wrong way over there.

Just another high end prospect thrown on the Oiler scrapheap. They sure are good at ruining prospects....and players...and air quality............and sweatpants too.

Oilers are well on their way to ruining another exciting prospect in Dylan Holloway. 3 pts in 22 games, getting less than 10 minutes ice time. Just send him to the minors already.
I hope JP does a full Nichushkin, and becomes a bonafide player somewhere else.

Broberg too. He has 13 games this year, Oilers have played 26.
6 games in NHL, 0 points and minus 3. They should send him down as well or play him.

I think he’s been scratched a bunch of times. He’s been a complete dud this season.

2 points in just 10 games.
Even former Flame Ryan Carpenter has more games played and points.

Apparently, he’s looked good the last 4 games after being healthy scratched for 8 straight. In those 4 games, he’s third on the team in CF%, at 60.4, and third in goals per 60, with 1.25 in very limited ice-time. The article I read says he’s been passing the eye test, playing solid in all 3 zones, and playing well defensively. The author has no explanation for him being scratched tonight, except for the fact that Filip Chytil is back from injury.
“Coaches decision” is the only comment from Gerard Gallant.

I hope the Oilers at least give him a change of scenery before he just gives up and quits the NHL. Do what's best for the player at this point, even if you have to give him away for literally nothing.

Why do I not remember him being on the team last year?? I must've been in an eight game coma.

The Oilers need to just send Puljujarvi to Arizona or somewhere where he can play and try and revive his career. I could see him finding his game and being an effective 2nd or 3rd liner.

I don't think this at all. Huberdeau has basically had zero space to make plays at 5on5. Lindholm and toffoli aren't guys that can carry the puck into the ice and create space and plays. They are more offensive finishers. Huberdeau is a playmaker but more of a “half court point guard” he needs to get the puck in space to make plays, so far as a flame, I dont see him as a guy who can cary the puck into the zone.
Boeser is a younger version of toffoli .
