I believe that in the modern NHL, as far as skaters go, only first line centers are more important and impactful than top-line offensive defenseman. Their ability to drive play from the blue line, contribute heavily to scoring, and quarterback the power play makes them invaluable assets. Unlike first-line centers, who dominate the offensive zone, these defensemen shape transitions, dictate pace, and provide crucial support at both ends of the ice. Many of them will play more minutes than any other skaters.
Wingers are nice, as are defensive defensemen. But offensively gifted two-way defenseman can rival centers in impact. I believe that, if Parekh reaches his potential, the Flames powerplay will be overwhemlingly more successful.
