There's always another reason to justify the clubs history of mediocrity, in this group.
Next year it will be an injury to a minor part of the team's defense or offense. It will be because the coach is new and needs time to adjust. Maybe it will be that we need to bring up more of the young players..
Who knows. But we will always have excuses

I didn’t see Huberdeau whining. I saw him putting in the effort in to the low skill system deployed, and getting the results you get from playing a good chunk of time with middle and bottom six linemates on your off wing, in a low skill system.
I saw players who were visibly frustrated in their interviews, but the effort was there
I don’t question the character or effort at all there for most players on the team
(Kadri, different story. He obviously had many costly turnovers where the GAF meter was turned off)
I did not see the team as having an epidemic of whiners.
|
Yeah Huberdeau was a total pro all year.
If anything he tried to hard and created some of his own misery.
That isn't to say his poor season was all on Sutter deployment and systems, as the player was dead on stick player for a lot of the season.
Glad Sutter is gone, they needed a new look, but I'm not letting Huberdeau off the hook for his share of a poor season (whether that's 20%, 80% or something in between)

I think it's fair to say Kadri wasn't alone.
But he was somewhat alone in mailing it in, which isn't a good luck for any player regardless of the situation.
Backlund had a career season for example and clearly didn't like the coach.

That really just illustrates how bad things were when a coach gets the best out of the player and the player hated things enough to want out. Different people handle things different ways. You can't expect all 23 players to handle things the same especially when there's a lot of turmoil going on. I'm not defending Kadri for his play down the stretch but he's got a cup ring and clearly knows what it takes to win. Things like this happen to any team when it gets toxic in the locker room.

For sure, he can take his share of accountability
Looking forward to seeing him under the new coach

Three issues:
Players
Coaching staff
Goalies
One is now gone, time for the two others to step up. Next season is on them.

Huberdeau's confidence was rattled and I think we both know how important confidence is to a player at any level, but especially at the tippy top of the sport. I think Sutter is mostly responsible for destroying his confidence instead of building him up.
I'm not going to get philosophical, but young men these days respond much better to positive reinforcement rather than that old school method of pushing buttons.

While I am ok with Sutter getting canned because of the issues of the ice, I think alot of posters believe that a new coach will make this a better team, not so sure about that.
Say what you want about Sutter, but he got results...this team almost made the playoff with a team in my opinion that had too many player turnovers, and lost star players to free agency. the number one issue this year, goaltending, killed this team, coach can't fix that, and even with all the off ice drama, if this team makes the playoffs, less likely the coach gets canned.
Constant change is not good. Players need consistency, not a different approach every other year. Am I to believe that a coach like Mitch Love and rookies are going to lead this team to the promised land?
Do people really believe that Kadri and Huberdeau are cornerstone franchise players?, if so why was Florida so willing to let him go so easily.
This team should off rebuilt last year, it was a desperate move to try and salvage a horrible off season, I understand the move, but it did not work, time to rebuild, it's going to be forced on this management group very soon, whether they like it or not.
Just rebuild already, you have a new arena and now would be the perfect time

I actually have no problem changing coaches with regularity. Things get stale, things don't work. You move on.
I am opposed to changing GMs regularly though. They should really have a good 10-year tenure to build their vision and change out the coaches as needed if they aren't doing a good job implementing the vision.

Are you watching the playoffs?

Kadri, I'm less confident. We overpaid for a career year that was always going to be hard to replicate, and he came back to Earth and his usual 50-60 points season. It's what he is - a solid 2nd line forward, but not a 7x7 guy. Especially in his 30s.
|
Is a 60 point, second line centre considered overpaid at his contract in todays NHL, though? I think the 7X7 is more reflective of his career average stats than his career season last year.
Now if you're making an argument that teams need to be paying young players for what they're on track to become than veterans for what they've accomplished in the past, then I'm with you.

I have faith Kadri will come back and be a huge impact player next season. I want to think it was the combination of a Stanley Cup playoff run hangover plus butting heads with Sutter that had him fall off the map in the second half.
He looked like he came in ready to give it his all and lead the Flames, but like some other players, Sutter's system and coaching choked the creativity and life out of their offensive game after a few weeks.

Has Kadri ever demonstrated that he was a huge impact player, with the exception of his one year in Colorado on a stacked team.
For the most part FA signing are bad value, and this contract will only get worse

I'd just like to know why Sutter thought it was a good idea to put Huberdeau on his wrong wing, and leave him there.

Weird season.
Flames were 2nd in Corsi and Fenwick (all situations). Next coach needs to tweak the system to better translate possession into goals, and shot suppression into goal prevention, but not tear down what Sutter built.

I think the trade and a slow start hurt his confidence more than the coach did.
