It's hard to imagine this going well for Russia in the end either. Even if they see China as an ally now, will they accept being the underling for them in the long run?
If Ukraine is holding out longer and tougher than expected - they will end up having to turn to stronger weapons - which will cause mass causalities and be immediately broadcast to Europe and North America - turning the opinions even stronger against Russia.
China will be more than happy to accept all Russian petroleum, so even with sanctions, they can sell it easily. Expect lots of trade deals coming up between them, and praising of each others incursions into other countries. They will use each others actions to justify their own. I fear we are moving farther and farther form a peaceful planet.

It is called LNG, and we need to get everything potential project approved immediately.
Kitimat won't come online soon enough.
I've been thinking about this for a while. We are a politically stable country who can provide the world with reliable energy resources that can be pretty much guaranteed, why wouldn't we take advantage? I think long term Canada could benefit greatly with stable contracts. BC is prepped for this. Word is Wood Fibre is a go and Fortis is also looking to expand. Hopefully now that people are realizing that things across the globe matter, we can come together and realize our energy independence. This is just LNG I'm talking about
FYI for paywall articles if you need to read them. 12ft.io and archive.md are your friends. 12ft.io will let you direct link to the articles for posts. Archive.md works too but not as good and gets hammered.
The Firefox addon Bypass Paywalls also works. Might be one for Chrome too, not sure.

Yes agreed - but China is the bigger more powerful country now. The US can dictate things to Europe and Canada. Will Russia accept that from China?
Completely symbolic - but would probably at least rattle Putin, if Hockey Canada, US, Sweden, Finland say they refuse to enter tournaments that include teams representing Russia (and no 'Russian Olympic committee' easy loophole). He does love hockey.
I did just see the Finland based KHL team pulled out the playoffs.

Absolutely.
There is a big demand. The emissions per ton for Canadian produced LNG are much lower than any other LNG in the world.
We need to wake up and realize the world needs what we have, nobody else can provide it with such stability, and nobody else will work as hard to reduce the emissions.

That's a big reason why this is so scary and upsetting.
If Russia needs no other reason to attack than the whims of it's leader, and the attack is not based on anything truly rational, then there's no safety in discourse, trade relations or diplomacy.
It's just para bellum from here on out. Even if Putin is replaced, there's nothing to guarantee that the next guy, or the one after that, is not just as bad.
Yes, this send the whole world back in time. Much less trust. Far more military spendings, which are essentially a waste for humanity as whole. Probably longer conscriptions. Every country will try to be self sufficient rather than trade, which will hurt global economy. The effects are truly global

The IIHF needs to step up and start moving the upcoming tourneys they have scheduled in Russia. (There are a couple next years U20 and something else according to Marek)
Then ban them from competing in those same tourneys.
Then I would like to see the NHL do something as well...not sure what they can legally do...but something. (Bloodthirst coming out i guess)
Its not likely to do much of anything but any internal pressure that can be manufactured by the Russian people needs to be encouraged and maybe hockey can be a catalyst for some of it.
Better than nothing, although Putin calling the Ukraine government drug dealers and neo-nazis doesn't lead one to believe the talks would be more than just a request to surrender whatever Russia wants.

Twitter thread with thoughts on how this is going from Russian perspective now.
People hate Putin so much that any type of "Russia is finding it tough", "Russia thought it was going to be easier", "Russia is stunned by fierce resistance" are very popular. Unfortunately, they are far from true. We are two days in and troops are encircling Kyiv already.

You don't think Russia thought they'd just blast through Ukraine and people would surrender? Like what happened in Crimea?
No one is saying Russia isn't going to do what they want to do. But I think its fair to suggest they may not have expected resistance to be as strong as it is.

Yeah, but Kyiv is what, 75km or so from Belarus border. Being AT the city isn't very impressive. Actually taking the city is a completely different matter.
There's no guarantee taking Kyiv will even end this.

r/worldnews was terrible for this earlier today. You'd think a big comeback is happening. In reality, not the case other than a feel good story for free upvotes and anything to increase moral.
In my eyes Ukraine is gone. Only a matter of time. At this point it's how much bloodshed has to happen. The monster is there, and there to stay.
Just had a video call with my wife. Non stop shooting could be heard and she was whispering the whole time. Because they live so close to the border, Russian soldiers keep coming across the border, through the forested areas and into their village. They are trying to make their way to Kharkov. After stumbling into the village, they see the highway which is a couple minutes to the east, and off they go. She said it has been a steady stream of tanks all day and people coming thru the woods. Russian soldiers have taken over the road, saying it's now the tank highway and if "you want to live", turn around.
Some people from her village actually tried to cross the border into Russia. The border guard took their phone numbers and said he would call them, but for now the border is closed other than tanks and Russian troops.
The look in her eyes...####. She can barely sleep, barely eat. Gunfire and yelling all around her. Would give anything to trade places with her.
