Yeah, the Panthers broadcast really hammering the goaltending point. Vasilevsky putting up a .934 vs. Bobrovsky's .841 and Driedger with a .871.
That's your series right there.

Barkov’s name has been popping up in rumors recently. One year left and he could bounce.

Florida has a lot to look forward to. Lots of forward depth, a healthy Ekblad would have been huge, Knight looks like he's going to be a stud.
A couple of tough contracts and a few things to work on, but their future is pretty bright.

I dont understand this way of thinking.
Why would the Flames have any more insight on Point than any other NHL team just because he was spawned in Calgary? Every single NHL team has scouts covering the Dub on top of which every single team passed on Point before he was selected.
Not to mention if you wanna go down that road...the last couple local guys they added in Raymond and Klimchuk certainly didnt work out.

Well Knight is their answer in net, unfortunately their other goalie will be a very expensive Bobrovsky.
Ekblad being out was a big detriment.

They had a lot of potential but some things ( lack of bottom six scoring (vatrano had an ENG, Wennberg had a PP goal, Lomberg had a goal), blueline issues (yandle and nutivaara were awful, Ekblad was injured, Weegar was pretty exposed in a top pair role), atrocious penalty killing, and goaltending) definitely hurt them. They've got a lot of young talent still on the way (Knight as a full timer, their 2020 first round pick Lundell, Denisenko, Heponiemi) plus the return of Ekblad.
The biggest question is what they do with Bobrovsky and Yandle... that's a lot of dead salary.

Watching Stralman in the line, hard to believe we just tossed him to the curb.

It’s informed by hindsight!
I’ll include former Hitman Getzlaf in that too

That was one of the worst moves GM Sutter made.

Joe Colborne, Devon Setoguchi, TJ Gagliardi.
Calgary’s had more good players from northern Alberta than southern.

It's less that Point was "local" and more that we literally drafted Hunter Smith that year when Point had a much better draft year and wasn't an overager.

Everyone should have drafted Point earlier, including Tampa Bay.

Again every team passed on him....hardly a black mark on just Calgary.
Drafting is a crapshoot. Always has been.

Every team passed on Hunter Smith about NINE times.
We drafted him.
Hunter.
Smith.

I don't mind the overager element. There's been a lot of good value picks over the years by drafting overagers: guys like TJ Oshie, David Perron, Tanner Pearson, Jason Demers, etc. I'm sure I'm missing some. But Hunter had a great junior year because of his size that he used to overpower his undersized opponents. It was a pick based on old school big=good mentality.
But a lot of teams made the mistake with Point. Even the lighting passed on him early in the 2nd taking Dominik Masin at 35 then the did it again at 57 taking Jonathan Macleod. Combined 0 NHL games between them.
The point (pun intended) is that the mistake is not unique to Calgary in any way, shape or form.
