Calgary needs to shed cap for next year to fit in Weegar and Huberdeau, so dumping Lucic next year without taking on additional cap is a must.

Yup. We have already committed cap for next year. In 2 years we have some room, but not a ton

Plus I would think the salary cap is likely to increase

If the team acquires Josh Anderson, it is proof that the virus within our organization for being absolutely blinded by desire for specific skills is ####ing incurable. We should be nuked from orbit if that's what they feel our team is missing right now.
I am desperately hoping this is not at all the case, but I don't think it's an offbase accusation from Sandman.
We need speed and skill. This is what we are currently missing.

For 2023/2024 the Flames are effectively capped-out on the projected $86.5M salary cap. We have enough to cover the raises to Weegar and Huberdeau, while replacing the other expiring contracts with near-league minimum deals.
With $4.787M the Flames would need to fill the “?” In the roster below:
Huberdeau - Lindholm - Toffoli
Dube - Kadri - Mangiapane
Ruzicka - Backlund - Coleman
? - Rooney - ?
?
Hanifin - Andersson
Zadarov - Weegar
Kylington - Tanev
?
Markstrom
Vladar
So, $4.787M to fill 4 roster spots.
The big question is whether the “core” is anywhere near good enough to contend for a Stanley Cup. If not, some pretty significant trades will need to be worked out. I really hope we don’t end up acquiring someone like Josh Anderson, as he’s not better than anyone on the projected roster above - so I don’t think he loves the needle.

IMO this team needs to prove that it's worthy of spending assets on. This isn't an organization that should be spending assets just to finish 3rd or 4th in the division this year.

Yeah. It's an aging roster but they still have several years to go before we start talking about the window being shut. No need to go for broke this season and I would rather save assets to ensure the team is better in the coming seasons than to double down on a disappointing season.

Especially since this feels more like a transition year with the new pieces getting used to each other. Let’s see what we have here, supplement it with some cheap youth and then add eventually in the next few years of our window.

Can't really blame him for wanting out. The organization changed directions on him.

So he is like the Anti-Doan?

Hmmm, took a peek at the Wranglers top 4 scorers...
Phillips, 24yo, 30 points in 20 games
Pelletier, 21yo, 23 points in 20 games
Zary, 20yo, 21 points in 20 games
Jones, 23yo, 20 points in 19 games

Lucic's contract ends this season, so no dumping needed.

I think Kylington or Hanifin have to be moved for some cap. A bottom pairing D can play in the bottom pairing and have less minutes. We have D capable of logging more than 20.

I assume what he means - that Lucic money is already basically allocated for 2023-2024 so he can't be traded for a contract with term like Boeser or Anderson. it might fit under the cap today but doesn't tomorrow

That's assuming the cap goes up. If it doesn't, we're actually over the cap and needing to shed more players without even dressing the 23 man roster.

IDK we always hear that such and such a team is in big cap trouble next season and it always seems to work out. If you can make a good deal to improve your team you do it IMO.
Dmen are in HIGH demand, worst case you trade one or two for futures/young assets in the summer

If you can make the team better now, you do it. Worry about the cap down the road.
