I think you're short at least 2 key pieces still for a realistic return.
It'd take a 1st rounder and a top prospect probably on top of Monahan+Hanifin IMO.

Salary cap question: can teams absorb a portion of a players contract? Like could the Flames and Sabres split that cap hit if Skinner was dealt.

I really want to keep lindholm. He seems like the type that can work with what he's dealt.

Lindholm is Markstrom's best friend and a big reason he signed here in the first place. So yeah let's piss off our star goalie by sending his buddy packing.

Anyone not Swedish is fair game IMO. Would rather not see Tkachuk traded, but if that is what it took I guess do it.
A multi-asset deal with Monahan would be great, but not likely a trade that Buffalo would be interested in.

So you’d scuttle an Eichel deal because Buffalo said “no Monahan but we’ll take Lindholm”.
And people complain about Treliving not wanting to pay the price for a big player.

Yeah that’s probably why you are going to have to take Skinner back. As others have mentioned his contract is an absolute boat anchor. He brings Eichel into an attainable range IMO.
Otherwise it’s crazy hard to get a young franchise very high end top line center... those guys are very very hard to get.

Guess I wouldn't risk splintering the room or creating a gap in talent to land him. Why trade for Eichel just to recreate Buffalo here for him?

I would happily deal Tkachuk if it meant Eichel was going to be a Flame.
Tkachuk and Monahan for Eichel as the main pieces.
1. I don't think Buffalo would or should trade Eichel
2. If they did for whatever reason, that's a good base
3. Fine tune it either way from there

Except you’re not: You have two decent centres left behind him, Tkachuk, Gaudreau, and yeah, you’ve traded a good D but you still have 3-4 good ones. And a stellar goalie.
Markstrom’s a pro. Lindholm may have made him happy to come but the dollars made him happier. And he’s getting Jeff freakin’ Eichel on his team.
Skinner included makes it pretty hard to close though. 9M until 2027 (34 years old) for a guy who’s fallen off a cliff.

I’ve never seen a team trade a centre with a profile like Eichel where the team didn’t regret it (and it was Boston twice).

Eichel is Seguin trade 2.0. A comparable would be lindholm, a 1st, a decent prospect and a quality tweener too 6 forward like magipane or Dube.

Eriksson is seven years older than Seguin. Lindholm is only two years older than Eichel.

Sequin wasn’t as good in Boston as Eichel has been in Buffalo. Even despite that, the Seguin trade was a fleecing at the time. Doubt Buffalo would want to repeat that!

The NHL is for grown ups. Markstrom is probably aware there is no absolute guarantee Lindholm remains a Flame. Things can, and do, change.

Doing everything to retain Lindholm should have nothing to do with Markstrom and everything to do with him being awesome.
