Its not like people want to trade Bennett for a bag of pucks. Its just we need help now and in the future. If we can get someone in the 24-27 range that is producing right now to help us over the hump, its more beneficial to this group than having to wait 4 years for the random chance Bennett turns it around. A 24-27 year old still gives you 4 or 5 years of good production. Obviously we would have to package Bennett to get anyone half decent.
On an unrelated note I believe we also need to acquire someone to bump Frolik down a line or even Backlund. The 3M is like a 2nd line because we need them to score like one but than they're also like a third line because we need them to take all the tough assignments. Our actual third line has no identity. If we could get another top RW so they can focus more on scoring and get easier matchups and our third line could take the tough assignments we would be much better offensively.

I'll take the under on 4 or 5 years.
Also, the Flames' window is not just this season, or the next couple seasons. They have just begun what should be a multiple year window. And not all players - on any team - are at their prime at the same time. It's okay to have guys that are still a work in progress.
Finding a winger for the 3rd line, and giving them a fresh start next year, could (and should) produce big dividends.

Tavares seemingly fits into the flames' cap structure for next year. It might explain the backlund talks going sideways and jankowski comments. If Tavares comes in, it could force janko to the wing or AHL for the remainder of the season. It might also make Backlund expendable for next season.
What do you think Tavares as a rental would cost?
FWIW, I ran the cap hits on the roster below for the 18/19 season, and it seems to fit within the cap structure of the flames. And there are transactions that could make Tavares fit even better (namely trade stone and promote Andersson; and buy-out Brouwer, which allows for an upgrade at RW).
Johnny-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Tavares-Frolik
Bennett-Backlund-Hathaway
Lazar-Jankowski-Brouwer
Giordano-Hamilton
Brodie-Hamonic
Stone-Kulak

Hahaha, the idea that the Flames looking at bringing Taveres in as a reason that Backlund talks aren't going well is like me saying I'm going to put my car on kijiji because I real feel like a Ferrari is coming my way this week.

Wait, I just realized the best part of your acquiring Taveres is he didn't even crack the first line in your mock up!!
Do you know who John Taveres is? The only reason any of this makes sense is if you were maybe thinking of someone else.

The NYI are not trading John Tavares at the deadline, let's not even go there.

Pretty much no chance Tavares comes to Calgary. There is no reason. If he wants money he can get that anywhere and likely more. If he want's to win there are way better teams. If he cares about lifestyle then ya Calgary ain't on the list. Not to mention the travel is much worse. He literally has no reason to come here. A western conference bubble team with the oldest rink in the league where the cultural event of the year is roping cattle and going on 40 year old amusement park rides.

Wow way to not hold any punches back.
I think it's a long-shot, but NYI are a tire fire. There aren't exactly a lot of teams in the position to accommodate his cap hit without a lot of maneuvering.
Maybe Hamonic puts in a good word and he likes the look of our team and the idea of potentially playing with the best play-maker in the NHL.
I agree it's a stretch, but it's not Edmonton or Winnipeg level bad.

I wouldn't want the Flames to trade for Tavares anyways, and honestly, if there was a remote chance that he'd even sign here long term he wouldn't want them to either. He'd want the Flames to keep as many assets as they can to increase the chances of winning a Cup while he was here.
IMO the chances of him signing here are probably well below 1%, but until he signs elsewhere let's just hope he gets to free agency and by some miracle the Flames pitch (because they would make one for sure) catches his attention in a major way.
Also, flameswin poking fun at buddy for having Tavares on line 2, it wouldn't matter. If they signed Tavares they would have TWO #1 lines if they kept Gaudreau/Monahan together, but I assume part of any pitch would be Johnny Hockey and how greatl he and Tavares might look on a line together.
Anyways, dream big but be mentally prepared for disappointment haha.

I'd tell Tavares that nothing he does in his career will be as important or gratifying as spending the next seven years kicking Connor McDavid's ass with Johnny Hockey on his wing.

Except you put him on a line with Brouwer, which would scare any free agent away.

Not Tavares, Brouwer's no worse than Lee and Bailey and he's turned them into PPG players.

'I' wouldn't put Brouwer on the 1st line, but the head coach would.

In all fairness, i built two first lines.
Tavares is so good he can drive his own line and thus doesnt need to play with johnny.

True.....and it seems the team wont be getting an arena any time soon. There are not many things to draw a top calibre free agent to Calgary.

After tonight’s performance, centering Tkachuk might look VERY attractive to him.
