And with Phoenix being in the league and willing to take on bad contracts with even a decent sweetener, anything is possible come the off season.

Why is Chuck Fletcher employed still? I'm not sure he has really done much in his career with a team that shows he is anything better than a safe pair of hands.

Fletcher GM and Yeo as head coach are the answers to; Name a gm and coach that keep getting work in the NHL but shouldn't.

Yeah the GM's comments that they have a "blank cheque" is a very transparent shout out to pending UFA's and Gaudreau in specific.
But nothing about that really concerns me, we have always known that Gaudreau would be a hot commodity in free agency.

Wait a minute here. So they're hinting that there might be a good chance Gaudreau ends up as a Flyer?
Well there is a new wrinkle. How come nobody has ever thought of that before?

Yeah yeah, this isn't news. What is, is that the GM came out and said they have a blank cheque and inferred they would be big spenders for their quick retool.
So for everyone who was like "well, but can any team afford Johnny" or "they have to pay him more cause they can only give him 7 years" etc, this puts the ball in Calgary's court in that they'll know what they have to pay him but it also puts the leverage squarely in Gaudreau's camp if it wasn't already.

Not a dig at you BTW, just a dig at the situation which has been coming for a long, long time. And since Treliving has been unable to extend Johnny, and also was unwilling to trade him prior to the last off season, the Flames have no one to blame but themselves for letting it get to this point.
Hopefully they can extend him, but I highly doubt that happens now. Especially with JG pulling the typical "pending UFA career year" BS that seems to inevitably happen.

I've thought far too often "impossible to do because of the cap", then Vegas entered the league....

They would have to do a lot more than move Giroux and JVR to offer Gaudreau $10M. With those two gone and adding $10M for Johnny, they would have 11 players on contract for $72M. They would then have $9M remaining to fill out the remaining 12 roster positions, or $750K per player. Does any team really want half their roster made of up players making the league minimum?

Pending UFA career year BS is a pretty darn awesome season where he flourishes under a Cup winning coach, and that we all get to enjoy, right?
The worst.

and while money talks and moving home is also nice, does a pending UFA really want to join that team?
(I'm not saying this as a denial shield against Johnny going to Philly or elsewhere- could happen- but I doubt it in the situation you lay out- poor to middling team, clearing out room and then having half the guys at league minimum- I doubt that is what hes looking for, but could be wrong)

Not to mention, they'd only have 3 NHL defensemen under contract. I get it, it wouldn't be easy. It's not easy for any team to fit in a $9 - $10MM player. Even the Flames. I'm not even suggesting I feel like the Flyers are the frontrunners. I think the Flames are. I'm just worried about the Flyers - they are having a terrible year, they're going to lose their captain and a hometown hero could be available. That kind of potential hype will not only appease, but generate a lot of excitement for what will be a pretty pissed off fanbase.

Say you are unable to sign Gaudreau.
Money too high of Philadelphia is just a better family situation.
What would it be worth to send the rights to Gaudreau (so the Flyers can sign him to an eighth year) and we take back Van Riemsdyk and his one year $7M contract?
They don't a second round pick the next couple of years which would normally be in the range. Frost at 22 looks like he will be a tweener and not worth the addition.

All things being equal would you guys rather have JT Miller or Bo Horvat?
Reading the Canucks thread on HF it seems like some think Rutherford is going to start making moves and Jimmy loves to trade. He wants to make a cap cushion. Miller and Horvat have the same term left on their deals and similar money. I would be happy with either but feel like Horvat would be a good Sutter type player.

I'd take Miller, more raw offensive production is what we need and he is a good distributor. I think he and Mangiapane would fit well together.
However, I can't see Vancouver wanting to trade us either player.
