It seems like basically a reboot / remake of the original, not part of any current continuity.

Think it's just a Japanese live action, completely separate of the recent American reboot.
Might be drawing on the older Japanese films, as it's the "fifth film in the Reiwa era".

The "Reiwa" era is just everything from Shin Godzilla onwards -- movie-wise it's just Shin and Minus One. They're counting the Netflix three-part anime movie in there too.
"Showa" era is the classic ones, "Heisei" is the 80's-90's ones, "Millennium" is the early 2000's.

Holy crap Napoleon is fkn terrible. Was Joaquin even in it or did they just grab a key grip or something that looked like him to woodenly stand there just saying lines, but not acting? Also, was this made when there was the writers' strike so there wasn't a script, but they had already built the sets and made the costumes?
Crappiest movie I've seen in at least three years. Couldn't have been worse.

I heard that it's funny, and that Joaquin comes off as if he's impersonating Tim Robinson playing Napolean. Also heard it's full off goofy, kinky sex scenes as much as it is battle scenes.
Maybe you were watching for the wrong reasons (a serious observer looking for the next best picture nominee)?
I plan on watching it as a comedy.

There's literally not one funny thing in it. I'm not saying that as somebody jaded, either. There was no element of humour whatsoever.
Also, a couple sex scenes but nothing overly weird or memorable. Don't even see one boob.
Whoever told you those things has not seen the movie lol.

Was from RottenTomatoes. I would hope those critics had seen the film.
They were early reviews though so maybe they were the ones paid off to say good things.

I'm a big Alexander Payne fan because I love anyone who can find comedy in dramatic characters and moments. You probably remember his last big film also starring Paul Giamatti: Sideways.
This time it's a story about a traditional boys boarding school in rural New England over the holiday break, and "The Holdovers" are those that cannot go home for various reasons and must stay at the school. It's a pretty simple story about people who live on the fringes, and while they may have fleeting thoughts about fitting into a normal society, the reality is that they are nestled quite comfortably in the fringe. These characters find and support each other as a sense of mutual understanding. They aren't all that similar, but they inhabit the same part of the world and get each other because of it. It's a charming, funny, and slightly tragic story, well worth your time.
Even more than that, it's a film that tries to recreate the style of the 70's. I don't just mean aesthetically, or by nostalgically recalling elements of the time, no. I mean it literally tries to be a film set in the 70's, even going back to 70's filmmaking styles of long scenes, wandering character work, and eloquent dialogue. Scenes are minimal, not making too much of a fuss, even in scenes of conflict. The story is almost ultra-realistic, where nothing extraordinary really happens, yet big moments happen all the same between the people. It's worth watching for the cinematic attempt alone.
I really enjoyed it. It's not going to blow everyone away, but if you really enjoy a methodic and thoughtful film, this is for you. 8.5/10.

I too liked The Holdovers a lot. It's the sort of movie I think unfortunately a lot of people would never bother to go see in a theatre, hence why they don't tend to make 'em like this anymore, but I echo pretty much everything Cali Panthers Fan said.

Nyad:
Light and easy fare.
Definitely had never heard of Diana Nyad before but I did find her story remarkable and Annette Benning did a good job portraying her.
6 out of 10 but for Netflix this is better than 98% of the bloat that makes up their content.

I so rarely agree with you on movies full-throatedly, but here we are. It was bad, so disappointing, and completely confusing to watch. I thought I was being pranked.

I watched two movies last week ( my first two movies in a couple of months at least).
On the Silver Globe, an old Polish Scifi. It was strange and hard to follow, but absolutely pleasing to the eye. The costume design in particular was gorgeous. 4/5
Eraserhead It is the first David Lynch movie I have watched. It was vaguely familiar and hilarious. I will watch it again after I've had my first child 4.5/5

I watched "The Binge" on Disney+ the other night.
It is essential "The Purge" but alcohol and drugs are banned. I laughed more than i thought i would. Vince Vaughn was worth it alone

Just got my tix for the latest Miyazaki movie The Boy and the Heron. Only 4 showings next week at either Landmark Country Hills or Chinook.
Haven't been to Chinook in 10 years. hope they have upgraded their crappy seats.

So weird, man. Last night I was hate-reading some stuff online about Napoleon and sure as sht you're right, some people are referring to it as a comedy. I can't understand that perspective. Will be curious to hear your thoughts after you see it.

Chinook hasn't done anything. Last flick I saw there , there was gum on the screen and the floors were sticky as hell. They really let that place go.

It's hard to describe how disappointing The Killer is.
Like the ingredients are there: Fincher directing, Fassbender playing an intelligent, introspective, obsessively detail oriented hitman, a score by Trent Reznor, pepper in some great music by The Smiths and Joy Division, and somehow you get this absolutely hollow and lifeless movie. I didn't like Fassbender's character, I also didn't hate him, I found him completely forgettable and dull. Was that a relationship I was meant to care about? Because I didn't.
You had incredible locations like Paris, New Orleans, the Dominican Republic and they didn't really even come close to capturing the beauty and character of these places, maybe the Dominican for the scene driving to his hide out, still, a missed opportunity.
Essentially it was just Fassbender droning on in the background about not being empathetic, trust no one etc. I get it. I guess the fight scene with "The Brute" was entertaining?

Crap. I guess I'm going to pay the price for my cheapness. It was $45 cheaper than the Landmark....

Saw the preview for this at Seton Sunday…. I just don’t get the appeal. They try to make it seem like some epic masterpiece, but I just see AstroBoy / Speed Racer 80’s level animation. Hard pass for me, but “art” is subjective.

A selection of animated movies I watched with my daughter:
The Bad Guys: Loosely based on my daughter's favourite book series (she spoiled a twist for me!) about anthropomorphic bad guys, led by Mr. Wolf, trying to move on from their stereotypes to become good guys. Doesn't break any new ground but provides a fun fast paced heist adventure with great looking animation. Sam Rockwell leads a solid ensemble voice cast. 8/10
Elemental: 90 minutes of water and fire puns. Didn't have Pixar does a by the book romantic comedy on the 2023 bingo card. Follows the romance formula with the exception of adding in an interesting immigrant story. Feels like it barely touched on the immigrant experience though other than adding in just enough to give us the expected Pixar emotional conclusion. The animation was gorgeous. 7/10
Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie: A pretty mediocre super hero origin story that is also a musical. Could only laugh at the premise that is basically a Parisian gender swapped Spider-man and Black Cat. Also found the romance between the two main characters funny as they couldn't get together because they were each in love with the other's alter ego. Did have some redeeming features with the characters and story but I checked out for most of it. My daughter seemed to enjoy. 5/10
Nimona: The best of the bunch. Based on a graphic novel in a science fantasy world, this follows an outcast shape shifter and an outcast knight who team up to uncover a conspiracy. Was hooked from the start with a big twist and mystery to uncover. Deals with some really dark and emotional themes to provide a rewarding character journey and conclusion. Enjoyed how this challenged fantasy tropes. Although you could tell the animation budget was not up to Disney/Sony/Dreamworks levels I enjoyed the fun visuals that combined 2D and 3D styles. 9/10

Come on man… this is a hand drawn animated movie done by a literal master of the craft. If you don’t like the story or whatever else fine, but criticizing the animation is like looking at a Van Gogh and saying “eh, it’s just paint on a canvas, I don’t get the big deal?”
