Saw Napoleon. Was pretty good. Entertaining. I liked the more modern characterization of people. However, given like 12 people actually spoke the whole movie, I really had a hard time getting past no one having a proper accent. How hard is it to find 6 actors that can do a French accent? One character that is Russian and there isn't a Russian speaking actor worldwide? Austrian? No one other than Kirby and Phoenix are recognizable, just cast people from those places. And they are both highly decorated performers. Feels lazy.

or at least go with Hollywood's traditional all-purpose foreign accent, upper class stage English
If you want a napoleon movie with French actors it’s not going to have a Hollywood director and it’ll have no budget. It’ll be a canal+ low rent miniseries on tv.
Movies with fake accents are almost universally awful. The way they’ve done it for napoleon is the only way to go.

I feel like this is a cop out. It's Ridley Scott. He can do whatever he wants. His most famous movie is one of the first action movies starring a woman (who was unknown at the time). I really don't think it's much to ask performers to put on an accent, they do it all the time. The guy playing Tzar Alexander was obviously putting on a (very bad) Russian accent. Just find a Russian dude. No one knows who that guy was. And I really don't think a Joaquin Phoenix French accent would have been a distraction. There's not even much dialogue overall.
I don't disagree it can work to just let people roll with what they got, but when part of the movie is political intrigue between Russians, Austrians, English and French, it gets a bit confusing when half the French people have British accents.
Again, there's probably a dozen people that have lines in the movie. Outside of the stars, no one is recognizable enough to make the case they couldn't just find actors from those places. It's not like any of them were chewing the scenery. And, sorry, if you're an award winning actor, try an accent, come on.

If you're so concerned about the movie being accurate for speech, you should be complaining they're all speaking English. The majority of dialog should be in non English tongues with subtitles. Wanting them to have cheesy accents is a cop out.

an accent does not a performance make.

I did like in the movie 'Valkyrie' with Tom Cruise when they all started out talking in German, then the movie subtly shifts to have them speaking English in American accents just to let you know... yes, this would've all actually happened in German, but we're a Hollywood movie so STFU.

I seem to think it does that in the Hunt for Red October as well, isn't the initial Russian dialogue in Russian then it moves towards Sean's beautiful accent

I watched the movie Eiffel about his challenges getting the tower built. It was all in French, including Emma Mackey, who I learned was born and raised there before moving to England. It's not a great movie either but I appreciated the authenticity, and her boobs.

Like I said, I enjoyed the movie. I just thought this aspect was lazy considering the talent involved.
I think it was likely a good decision, not lazy filmmaking.
Give me a movie where there are no attempts at a regional accent, than one where the cast are all over the map in their attempts, or do a really bad one.
I don't think it shows the worth of an actor if they can do a good accent.
