Did you play Death Stranding? That game lacked anything but substance.
Agreed. I understand why many other games didn't like Death Stranding or hated the plot and style of the game, but it wasn't lacking in substance.
Kojima "innovating" the horror genre and Peele offering ideas to twist the genre will be interesting. Peele has done a great job with his movies with new ideas and lower budgets. I am intrigued to see what he'd do with a big budget platform to bring his ideas to life.

Kojima also said he is collaborating with a few other people on this project and he wasn't comfortable saying who at the moment but he did define them as "legends" and calls the full team of people collaborating on this the "Avengers". So That as you want as well... But it sure sounds like there will be some more big names attached to this in the future.

In Death Stranding, part of that was having those big names in the game itself. TBH, I've always wondered what Guillermo del Toro's contribution in Death Stranding was. It seems like it was mostly just his likeness and voice, but to me, that seems odd if that's the case. Either he did contribute more in a sort of uncredited role, or it was a collaboration built towards something bigger (ie: OD).
In OD... pure speculation, based on the rumors of lots of collaborators, I wonder if at the design level it's a little bit like American Horror Story or Love Death and Robots where different individuals contribute a piece that will end up plugging into a specific unified universe. Each chapter has a slightly different motif/style/individuals from a different contributor and this can be explained away via the different "states/emotions" of a character.
Kojima also likes the death motif, but in the Death Stranding gameplay itself, there's not much death that typically happens to your character in the game.
I wonder if in OD, the character you control will constantly die as part of a necessary game mechanic. With Peele being a huge part of the rumor and Kojima loving to innovate, I can't help but think there's gotta be a huge mind #### level of design in the game. I'd also be curious if they'd do a randomized state after each death (ie: Like randomized bonuses in roguelike games like Hades) to allow for these types of collaborations and integrations of many different ideas with slightly different styles/motifs/flairs. If PT was a hint of his thinking, I think he's been thinking toward in a sort of Silent Hill direction vs more action related horror games.
All the speculation could be way off, but for those that kinda like this stuff, if you did or didn't engage in it with Death Stranding, it's worth seeing what the speculation on OD will be like. It's actually kinda fun to put together theories and see how close or far the theories were like in the end.
On a whim I picked up a new metroidvania called Worldless. It has a great style and atmosphere, and it's got a really different combat system for a metroidvania. It's turn based action combat that rewards precision and timing over button mashing. When it all comes together the combat looks and feels amazing. It also gets pretty tricky...the later battles really force you to use every skill your character has. I'm near the end of the game and sometimes when I fail a battle (no penalty for fleeing or losing) I need to sit there for a minute and think about how to tackle the enemy again.
The story is doled out in small bits over the course of the game and meant to be more of a background mystery than front and center of the game. If you enjoy games that emphasize atmosphere then this is a great one to check out.

One more thing to add for this game since I tried the post-game stuff yesterday. If you like Hollow Knight's path of pain or the pantheon fights, then Worldless' post-game will intrigue you. If you're like me, you'll just nope out real fast. It's extremely hard and time consuming! Good thing it's optional.

After recent revelations from the OD trailer, ATAMI spelled out letter by letter in Udo Kiers mouth, there is speculation that this game could be a spiritual successor to PT. So I won't be surprised when Guillermo del Toro is eventually added as a collaborator officially.
Atami is city in the Shizuoka prefecture. And Shizuoka literally means Silent Hill. So this could be based in the world of Silent Hill or perhaps the game he wanted to make after PT without the Silent Hill branding.
One other thing I forgot to mention as well is when Kojima was introduced at the VGA's he walked out of the PT door.
