Rumour has it that the Islanders aren’t happy with Eberle’s poor playing this year.
Not sure how they feel about his wife.

Team would improve the depth all around and free up more than $8.5M in additional cap space next summer by moving Frolik, Ryan and Czarnik

This isn’t NHL 18 or whatever. No GM not held at gunpoint makes either of those ridiculously one sided deals.

That is what I used to say as well.
Then Sutter traded Phaneuf for a bunch of spare parts

I'm actually surprised you jumped on the guy for those... Frolik is out scoring Eberle and has another year of team control left on a not so bad deal. Couple with the fact he's twice the player defensively I think he is worth more as a trade asset to a team with space next year. Granted Lehner is a huge upgrade over Smith but then Calgary throws in a pick. I mean the isles are still the the race and seem unlikely to downgrade in net but value wise... Not a huge reach.
Same with the other deal... Not that bad. A struggling aging forward and depth defenceman for one of the best faceoff guys in the league with offensive limitations and a depth forward. Without looking into the cap ramifications in deal 2 I have seen way worse.

Why would Isle make any moves? They could be 1st in their division by the All Star break, and Lehner's been a big part of that. Maybe they recoup something for Eberle if he's still struggling but not their starting goalie.

What advanced stats?
He's 8th amongst forward in CF%, 7th in CA/60, 2nd for forwards in SCA/60 and 2nd in HDCA/60
Not a lot bad happens when he's on the ice.

This is a situation where the eye test is in lock step with the calculations.
Ryan is decidedly boring. A unique skill in hockey.

I think Talbot would be perfectly fine here, and offseason he'd be a decent signing. But I don't think Flames and Oilers are making a trade.

Trade a disgruntled player who's been benched, the 49th best goalie out of 50 that played 15 or more games and a throw in pick, for a consistant 20+ goal scorer and #2 goalie in the league in save percentage...
The Islanders clearly need to sweeten the deal by adding Barzal.

Is Frolik disgruntled though? The guy has 8 points in 8 games. I think that he and Peters and Treliving are content at the moment. There is a saying in sports "winnning cures everything".
I agree there is no way that trade is going down, and there is no way Frolik is involved. The guy has been too good in the last month.

at some point you have to believe that either the Flames are a very good team, or that they have achieved this through smoke and mirrors.
Chemistry is very under rated... i'd prefer tinkering at the edges over major adds when your team is doing well. Or if you do a deal, you would do it in a way where the room stays intact... trading picks or prospects for example.
I can't think of any major trades prior to the playoffs that amounted to turning a team into a SC winner

Mike Smith should be the #3 guy that could step in. Why would we have to resign ourselves to accepting that our backup is a very high risk to drop games on his own?
Let me ask you, since you’ve been defending Mike Smith for a while now, how comfortable would you be having him start in the playoffs if Rittich hits a wall or is unable to play?

I am hoping Calgary can make a trade with Ottawa before we see Duchene and Stone on San Jose for a 3rd pick lol

I have not been defending Mike Smith. Show me where I have been doing that except from point out where people blame him for a goal they shouldn't.
Other than that i have actually said I'm NOT happy with him as a back-up.
So again - tell me where I have defended Mike Smith.
My point was that the tweet from Friedman leads me to believe we are looking at a third option not a new backup.
I would prefer a better backup but I'm not going to get too twisted up about it.
