Not sure why they didn't show the play in question during the highlights. I really wanted to have this cleared up. I've just never heard of this interperatation of the rule, but the match commentator seemed pretty adamant that the ref got the call right and I can't imagine he didn't see the player on the goal line, so maybe I am wrong. But Jesus, in all my years, I have always believed it was the last defender being the determining factor for offside. Had no idea the goalie was part of the equation.

Wow, I'm also shocked, I always thought it was one defender between you and the net not two. Wow.

Ok, I'll concede. Based on those links, I was wrong. My apologies, but it doesn't look like i was the only one confused by this so that makes me feel somewhat better, but I still feel like an idiot.

You're confusing yourself by talking about the position of the keeper, it doesn't matter what position the player is. The onside rule focuses on the second last player of the defending team, regardless of position.

Here's a pretty cool site. Forgive me if it's already been posted in the thread. Just move your cursor over any part of the calender and it will show you any information related to it. (ie: if you put your cursor over any team it will you it's matches, if you move it over a date it will show you matches played on that day, etc)

Heh. Only reason I know is because I saw the same thing a few years ago in a Champion's League match and that's how I learned it. Commentators always say the last defender back which is wrong.
You can see the British commentator knew right away.

Beautiful placement. I'm pretty neutral with this match, but yet found myself cheering when that went in. Apparently I'm leaning towards South Africa more than I thought.

Who says it's only goals that are exciting? That was a great shot and a great save!
