I saw Colm Wilkinson play Jean Valjean in a special Les Miserable at the Princess of Wales Theater in Toronto back in 1998 (I first saw Les Mis at The Royal Alex in '93 with Michael Burgess as Valjaen). This is a CD that I have never regretted purchasing and the emotion that comes through on this performance really enhances the listening pleasure.

This is the first album from the second quintet: Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. Any of the albums by this group are outstanding, and it's a toss-up between this one and Miles Smiles as to my favorite, but I lean to this one. Just really stunning music.

Nice pick, EmoIn80!
It's good that you got a raise at work. You know someone has respect for your decisions.
It's so sad that Emo has become associated with crappy pop punk. I am not a huge emo band but back before the late 90's emo music was something completely different.

Prot, if Sowa picks you can go ahead. I can't make my pick until this evening....7 hours or so.

You're very welcome! I just picked it up before Christmas after seeing so many good reviews and it immediatly went to the top of my playlist and still remains there. A fantastic album!
For the 2000-2002 category I'm going a little off kilter and picking Light Green Leaves by Little Wings.
Can't find an album cover to link to.
This was a follow up to his "Wonder Trilogy". I am not a huge fan of this alt-country, anti folk genre or whatever you want to call it genre, but I am a huge fan of Kyle Field's unique voice. For fans of The Microphones, Will Oldham, Devendra Banhart, or anything on K records.
With my next pick I select, in the category of Punk, Houe of Large Sizes 1994 release, My Ass-Kicking Life.
House of Large Sizes (HOLS) doesn't really fit into my traditional interpretation of what punk rock is, but I've decided that my interpretation is probably a little narrow. After exploring Trouty's pick of Sleator-Kinney (sp?) I came to the conclusion that HOLS fits, even if they don't sound much like The Sex Pistols. This album, particularly, fits.
HOLS is a trio that has been around for 20 years, and has found enormous success on the small stages of the upper midwestern USA. Husband and wife team Dave Deibler (guitar, voclas) and Barb Schilf (bass, vocals) have released several albums with a variety of drummers. Rising up out of the music hotbed that is Cedar Falls, Iowa, HOLS was really the product of a lot of Husker Du and The Minute Men worship. However, HOLS sounds original and Diebler's guitar work is certainly worthy of bigger stages than HOLS has spent the majority of their career playing on.
My Ass-Kicking Life was their first major label release.
As usual, the youtube availability is limited, but the entire record is great. Check it out if you get a chance. You should be able to get a piece of each song from the track listing links.
Sox on Spot
North Cedar (live)
I Have My Doubts (live) video also has 2 other songs not on this album: 2 liter man and Eisonhower.

In the 97-99 category, team Twist/Shout picks The Gathering (1999) by Testament.
Many are propably familiar with this classic thrash band, who never really reached the level of consistency and quality to make it into the big time in the style of Metallica and Megadeth. Which is propably why many seem to have missed out on this excellent, stand out album from the bands catalog.
I'm back guys and had to totally rebuild my computer
My pick is 6 picks away so I'm just going to hold out till then and make my 8th and 9th pick then. I really don't like out of order picking, while I don't mind it from others I would prefer to hold myself to that.
Thanks

Whoa. I didn't even notice that "emo" crack (and, yes, I realize I even quoted it). Emo is one of the most overused words on the planet. People don't even know what it means anymore.
I apologize for picking an album that more than two people on the planet have actually bought, instead of MC Funky Top Drawer and The Monkeying Melvin's Primate Panderers or whatever it is people would rather see me pick. I like music that sounds good, has interesting time-changes, and doesn't require a degree in interstellar space travel in order to listen to it. Shoot me, imo.
Maybe I'll dedicate the rest of my picks to selecting the most chalk-boardingly grating albums I can find. Pee Wee Herman, Britney Spears, Nickelback... I'm looking at you!
Itse, one of the best triple bills I ever saw was back in 1990. Testament opened up for Megadeth and Judas Priest. One of my top ten all time shows for certain. I have to admit, I haven't heard anything past Souls of Black. I'll have to take a listen.

I actually don't mind Fallout Boy. Not my cup of tea. I think it just angers me that the label "emo" is thrown around for everything now a days when it used to define a very unique genre of which Fallout Boy is not part of. I appreciate the ability to write pop music well.
