It's the constant turning on and off of the 3G that kills it. As I understand, it puts the 3G to "sleep" when not in use to save battery life. Having it check emails every 15 minutes will kill the battery.
I found that leaving push enabled kills the battery too. I don't know exactly how it works but it stands to reason that push on an exchange server (which I was using) would require the iPhone to be connected to the net constantly, which is expensive power-wise.
Battery life is actually very good disabling those things.
I thought a true "Push" server would have to use your phone number to send a non-data message to your phone notifying it of a new message, eliminating the need to be constantly connected to the internet. Anyone else know?

I saw a guide somewhere that walks you through doing it in iTunes. It's really simple, just have to change the start and end time in the properties of the song (in other words, select 30 seconds of a particular song) and then right-click convert it to AAC. Then you just have to drag the file to your desktop, change the extention from .m4a to .m4r and then double-click it to have iTunes copy it to the ringtone folder.
Sounds a like a bit of work, but it literally takes about 15 seconds to make a ringtone out of any song in your iTunes library (whether you bought it from iTunes or not).

Hope this works, I'm going to try it this weekend. It's the only thing I miss about my Pearl is the easy setting of ringtones.

Hm, I may disable push and see what happens then, I'm only using it to keep my calendar and contacts up to date, and from what I read if you disable push you still get a manual sync when you open the calendar or contacts application.
I charged my phone half the day yesterday, unplugged at like 3pm, by 10pm I was at half and by the morning I had the 10% warning.

I also have a first generation and on a rainy week, I'll charge it once and that's it.
(During sunny weeks, I take it to the pool with me and play music over the internal speaker.... that *REALLY* eats the battery)
But listening with headphones on.... I started Monday at 8:30, left at 5:30 and had it playing the whole time. Expected it to be near dead but there was nary a dent in the power.
What I have learned is that you ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS go back to the main menu before shutting it down for the night. I've had a few times when I just paused the music and hit the button on top and went to bed only to find a completely no-responsive unit in the morning. Even if I want to put on some Enya before falling asleep - Find Song, Play, Exit to Main Menu, Click Top Button.

Just curious, and it's a really stupid question, but has there been any reports of viruses from downloading attachments and surfing the web on any web enabled phone yet? Just seems like a matter of time until these things happen. Will Norton have a mobile version?

i imagine the risk level would be about as high as using a mac, which means the iphones should be pretty safe from viruses and the like. Maybe I'm just naive, but I'd much rather just be extra cautious with my downloading habits then have Norton even get a sniff of my device.
Any time I need extra battery life I just turn off push and it seems to help a lot. I'm usually around a charger, so I just let it push all day.

AOL Radio eats up battery like no other. 2 hours max from full charge.
Just found this about push notification:
A new test version of Apple's next iPhone firmware update has disabled a key service that will allow background data for native apps, with no clear sign of when it will return.
While beta 4 of the iPhone 2.1 update comes with Apple's typically unspecific references to bug fixes, it explicitly withdraws support for the push notification service that will send Internet data to third-party apps even while they are shut down.

Looks like Apple knows it eats battery life.

I would assume you mean Push e-mail? Basically, with conventional e-mail, you log in to hotmail or whatever e-mail service provider you have and check your e-mail manually. With Push e-mail, you register with RIM your e-mail addresses, and instantly, when your e-mails are received, they're directly PUSHED to your phone and viewed instantly.

Ok, thanks. So the problem with the iphone is that doing this kills the battery life? and the alternative is having to periodically check emails instead of having them instantly pushed?

I think so. I don't have an iPhone, but I think that's what people have been noticing. Though, on an iPhone, it's not Blackberry's servers pushing the e-mail, but rather Apple's servers.

OK, so I am considering moving from Telus and getting an iPhone this weekend.
Anything I should know / be aware of? Can I get a better deal if I also move my wife's phone over?

To be clear, all push means is the opposite of pull. Literally.
When you go to a website, you pull data down. When you check your email, you pull data down. When your email client automatically checks your email for you, every 10 minutes, it still just pulls data down.
When an email server sends email to you, without any interaction on your part (or your email client's part), it's pushing data to you. When a web server automatically sends you an updated data stream, it's pushing it's data to you.
Putting email and the web aside for a minute...
In the realm of the iPhone, there is a background service built into the firmware (read: OS), that enables applications to register with their own push servers. This means that if you have a sports score tracker running, it can be installed in a way that allows it to receive "realtime" pushed score updates, without you having to tell it to update.
This means that, you're sitting in a movie theater with your girlfriend... watching Sisterhood of the Traveling Unmatched Socks, during Game 7 of the Sharks and Flames...
Instead of having to refresh the score every time you want an update, you can just sit there and bask in all the movie's Ya-Ya glory, knowing that within seconds of someone scoring a goal, you'll get a realtime update pushed to your phone.
That's what they're disabling. Not push email, they're killing pushed (3rd party) application data.

Photon, have you tried a full restore? Like set it back to factory settings and let iTunes reinstall the updates and apps?

Hm.. haven't tried that no. I've basically disabled 3G at this point as the dropped calls were really starting to get to me, and it definitely improves the battery situation and call quality for me for now. Which is stupid, that defeats the whole point of the new iPhone, but I hope they'll patch it to improve it.

The one thing that bugs me....is when I'm on a call, I often hit some of the buttons with my cheek. I wish there was a way to disable the keypad when you're on a call.
