Good call on the Versa.
As for the resale on the Hyundai even if I only get $8000 back in 4 years I'm still ahead financially. With the Hyundai, I would be financing as opposed to leasing, so the car is mine and any resale I get is money in my pocket.

I see. Well i would try to get something you could afford to finance versus leasing if this is your personal vehicle. If that meant financing the accent over leasing the civic it'd be wiser to go with the accent. Hopefully though you could find a Japanese car that you like that you could afford to finance...that would be the best of both worlds IMO (fit, versa, cube, matrix over vibe for sure, corolla, sentras can be cheap, etc).
I do like Hyundai and I think there Sonata is nice and the genesis coupe is awesome if not a little expensive, but the accents just aren't the best value IMO.

Sliver, what do you think of the Elantra? I'm trying to decide whether to buy a brand new Elantra for around $14,500 or spend around the same amount on a used Civic. What would you recommend? I'm not too worried about resale value as I'm likely to drive it until it dies fifteen years from now.

I know this was just asked, but is now really the best time to be going into a car dealership? I'm thinking of buying a 2009 Hyundai Elantra, so I assume the best time to buy is the day before the 2010 models show up on the lot. Does anyone know when this is? Cheers.

Well again hyundais aren't bad but hondas are better hands down. A used civic is a great choice. An even better choice if you want something more upscale is an Acura EL or CSX. You could find an el for sure in that range...not sure about a csx. Both those Acura models ate sister cars to the civic and very nice with some classy touches.
If you're more of the kind of guy/gal that sees a car as a means to get you from a to b then you're best off with a civic.
You can be very confident in a long life with your civic and it'll always look nice IMO if you keep it maintained and waxed. The Hyundai, I believe, will nit age nearly as well and will for sure not run as tight. There's a reason every Hyundai over 10 years old looks like a pos...they just don't age well.

I've read some of this thread and the car salesmen guys seem to believe any time can be a good time. If it were my buying that elantra, ID wait until the 2010s were already on the lot. You'd have some wicked leverage on the 09s at that point.

Whats better? financing a car or buying it all at once? That's my problem. And what are the advantages and disadvantages of both?

I've been on the Honda site and I've priced a new Civic. They have two prices - cash purchase price and MSRP. I would like to buy the car straight up but I think this might be too good to be true - they're offering a stock DX 2009 model for $14,500, the same price as an Elantra.

It's possible I'm sure...give them a dingle. Also look at buying a car in the states. I did a couple of years ago and saved a pile of money.

Tim, I really dislike the way most new BMW's and MB's look these days (they've lost a lot of their simple refinement imo), and am considering buying an older used model....which of the previous generation german cars do you recommend to look at, and or stay away from?
Based purely on looks, my ideal car is an early 90s BMW e30 (3 series) or a MB 190e....I just love their simple clean lines....but not sure if by now they would result in a lot of mechanical issues. I'd like something sporty and refined, but reasonably reliable!
Under 10-15K, what model would you go after?

Tough call Table. I would go with a 93-95 w124 (E-Class) especially a 94 or 95 E420. The Pre 1996 E-Class is the last of the great German Engineer built cars in my opinion.
there was an e320 coupe out back then that was a hell of a car as well.
I would assume the BMW side of things would be similar.
Tim

Yeah, those are some great cars aren't they? I especially love their interiors, they just feel so..uh, german!?
The problem Im running into is that it seems like the vast majority of Mercedes are automatic transmissions, which for me is a deal killer ( I just did a quick search on Mercedes on ebay, and all the e-classes in that year range are autos). I need the manual. A few years ago I heard that Mercedes was only importing automatic transmissions into the US.....do you know what year that applied to?

I only need a vehicle that's going to last me eight months tops. It would only be used to drive to and from work, and to and from the gym. Is $1000 - $1500 a reasonable price range for a vehicle like this or will I end up getting burned?

Extended warranties? Are they worth it?
Looking to buy a car that comes with a 3 year warranty on a 4 year lease. Is the extended warranty for an additional year worth it? Costs an extra $1000.00

I highly recommend the BMW e46 3 series, this is years 2000-2005 or so. I drive a 2001 330CI and absolutely love it. Such a joy to drive, every feature I need, room for 5 people, good storage space and looks beautiful IMO. You could likely pick up a 4 door version for around 15K or drop down to a 325 or 323 and save some $.

Don't get a Mercedes ML 350. Piece of crap, if you ask me.
I'm actually probably going to stay away from the Mercedes brand forever after my experience with the ML... and also their customer service.

purely a judgment call. If you took the same $1000 and put it in a bank account only for car repairs do you think you would spend it?
Personally i am a warranty fan on cars for as long as you are going to keep it. Cumputers etc in todays cars are expensive to repair.
others will say.. bah you don't need it.
