I'd bet either Whitecloud or Pachal will be moved before the deadline.

To CGY: Kotkaniemi, DAL 2026 1st
To CAR: Kadri
I'd do that.

CAR is on his NTC

Conroy just said Zayne is going get the majority of his time on the PP (...wtf), and that Weegar can play on Left D. Doesn't sound like Whitecloud is getting traded, they expect him to come in and play big minutes.

Whitecloud is already a good D man. Gotta flip him

Just catching on Conroy on fan 960 right now
Doesn't think this is one move
Says the plan doesn't change, will continue to try to get young guys in
Whitecloud won't affect Zayne's ice time on the power play, which is where he will get most of his ice time. Weegar can also move to the left side if needed

As for picking Hart candidates, fully agree. We'll likely need one to pull out of our current decent. Gotta have a shot at it though by being in the top 10 draft picks.
Anyway I look forward to the conversation shifting from whether we're in a rebuild to assessing the quality and fit of our young assets.
|
With Treliving and Sutter the Flames were never going to rebuild in 2023. Brad told owners he would build a winner and Sutter would never have agreed to a rebuilding team. Meant a missed opportunity with Tkachuk but it is what it is.
Conroy came in and presented his plan to rebuild and ownership signed off on it. Might be fair to criticize not trading some guys last year but I think he just felt he had to give them a chance since they were so close to making the playoffs. Fact that he did next to nothing trying to improve outside the Frost/Farabee trade (and I suspect he will end up netting out more picks than he gave up in that trade) tells me that at best his plan was delayed a year. But he has consistently implemented his plan and I think any reasonable person knows it will take time.
See what Conroy does the rest of this year but I suspect at the end of the day he ends up moving 2 more assets out for picks and prospects and moves even more next year.

I recall getting ripped by people on here for commenting that we always add retool type players in trades…

I would personally hope to get more than that. Kotkaniemi is the equivalent of eating 4.8 million dollars of salary and the Dallas pick will be at best 26th overall. Also don’t think Kadri has Carolina on his list.

Whitecloud is a pretty decent player. If the Flames hold onto him at the deadline, that will be a pretty clear indication that they want to be in the playoff mix next season rather than in a lottery pick position.

When's the last time the Flames traded a good roster player who had term? They didn't do it with Zadorov, Lindholm, or Hanifin. The Devils had a deal for Markstrom when they would have gotten two playoffs out of him, and the upper brass pulled the rug out from Conroy. And they just walked Andersson to rental status.
If the team moves Kadri or Coleman it will be a break with well-established philosphy of the franchise. It's pretty clear they value being a player-friendly destination more than maximizing asset value.

He said "this is the first one" right at the end of the interview.
Sounds like he has plans...
Spoke specifically to how we're going to continue to get more young players into the line-up as we go down the stretch...seems to me he's alluding to more trades coming.

If Conroy plans to shop Whitecloud, he isn't going to say that publicly. I wouldn't read much into anything he says about his usage

This is extreme sarcasm but I cant wait to see what kind of defensemen the Flames trade Coleman and Kadri for.
