Where did Fitz say that?
Said it here. https://heavy.com/sports/nhl/new-jer...t-pick-goalie/

"Yeah, for sure,” Fitzgerald said when asked if he’d trade the No. 10 pick. “I’m more than willing to move the pick for the right asset. One that we control, one that’s probably in the same demographic as our team—maybe not 23, 24 years old but somebody we control for a few years.”

Interpret that how you will.

Mercer is already that guy.

Ordinarily, the price would be high for a goalie.

But Jersey doesn’t have any other major needs.

They don’t need a centre.

They were so flush with wingers they gave us Sharangovich.
The Devils have big holes up front. Toffoli was 4th in team scoring when he was moved. And they need to replace Macleod, who was their #3 C and played a lot of minutes.

If Fitzgerald does trade the #10OA, there’s a good chance it’s to bring in a forward in the age range he talks about in the comment Lanny quoted.

The Flames have a 26 year old scoring winger who potted 31 goals last year that the Devils might be able to get for that 10th overall pick.

I think you are overvaluing Macleod and overselling their need for a forward. Toffoli had another 30 goal season last year he would have been top 4 on a lot of teams. There are far more solid forwards available in free agency than goalies. They have Hughes, Hischier, Bratt who are all top line forwards and Mercer is a guy who could pop next year.

They clearly need a goalie. Their GM stated they need a goalie and cited they would shop the 10th pick with that in mind.

I don't see that. The Devils have two young goalies they want to get backup minutes for. They need that #1 vet goalie for 2-4 years until one of those guys is ready.

NJD definitely didn’t care what Markstroms numbers were against the oilers. His advanced metrics have him as the best goalie available and someone they can count on to help them push for a cup in the next 2 years.

Trying to find out why no announcement(s) but nothing yet on timeline.

Any sneak peek of what the return may be?

And they have Timo Meier who was one of their best forwards after the trade deadline and was looking like his former San Jos self (for those looking for a bit of a value guy in fantasy leagues).

With him going, the young guys taking another step and Hamilton healthy, that team is primed.

But they need a goalie. Badly.

Friedman on the Marek show today (paraphrasing):

Markstrom has let Calgary know he wants to play for a contender. The Flames have not yet given up on the idea that they could be that team.

They aren't opposed to trading Markstrom, but the asking price is different depending on who the asking team is.

Doesn't expect anything until draft weekend

My comment - we've officially gone in a complete circle. The contender comment was the same comment trotted out by insiders when they didn't trade him at the deadline. The draft can't get here soon enough.

Birds will fly, fish will swim, and the Calgary Flames will brazenly ignore the stupendously conspicuous writing on the wall.

You think the Flames actually believe they can contend next year? Versus just not admitting to a fire sale on Markstrom?

Every trade Conroy has made since Toffoli has been a rebuilding trade, I suspect his next trades will be as well. He definitely traded Zadorov and Lindholm early enough that he could have done retooling trades if he wanted but he didn’t. I just think the Flames (like every team not named the New York Rangers) are unwilling to publicly say they are rebuilding and not trying to win.

Nothing concrete, but the 10 pick can’t be ignored.
I did ask about the Friedman comments and was still reassured that the principle is already in motion. It sounds like it’s determining what additional could move as well, retention almost certainly is included but could see another roster piece from Calgary move though not confirmed.

Less than 10% chance it doesn’t happen, I’m not buying the “flames still think they can be a cup contender” bit, more so I think this is said because no GM is going to come out and publicly say they expect to tank.

What we know:
Markstrom will waive for NJD - So safe to say he views them as a contender
Markstrom wants this to be over as much as the fans do
Markstrom hates the media attention
Markstrom's days in Calgary are numbered

I expect a fun draft day
