Francis sees these stories, that have to have a (potential) larger context/audience then the Calgary market (which is debatable, only serious fans of NHL probably know of Pelletier) to try and make some personal brand/“hay” with. After writing ridiculous articles like this, it knows it will be an ego stroke as it gets him on Edmonton or Vancouver sports radio as the “Flames insider” probably this week.
He will never get back on HNIC like he was for that one year, but he thinks he might, every time he can grab onto a story or situation and sensationalize it.
Sutter does not and has never given Francis the time and the feels that Francis thinks he deserves.

No.
And is it surprising to see the coach fed up with media members who have been hounding him daily about playing prospects? And criticizing him relentlessly about just about everything he does this year?
Think for a second. Try to understand the other side.

The one thing I hate about the super early games... the ATL is burried on page 31.

Uh, every coach gets fired eventually. I’d say he’s done pretty well with only two over roughly 21 years coaching. First after 5.25 seasons in San Jose with 5 seasons in the playoffs. Second after six seasons in LA, four playoff appearances and two Stanley Cups.

That question was way more disrespectful than the answer.
Sutter answered questions on Pelletier during the week. You know, not immediately after maybe the teams biggest win of the year. The athletic did a great piece for example. This has nothing to do with Pelletier as an individual.
The post game Q was immature bordering on a deliberate dick move, not hard hitting journalism. Does someone figure there’s a scoop coming out of that? At best you’d get Coach says rookie was ‘fine’. News at 11.
So why ask it then? The pat on the head for the rookie quote can come any time. The reporter is obviously much more interested in what he perceives as the shiny keys in the minors than the team or what happened in the game. Dude should get the last question at every pressser for a while.

I'm having trouble siding with the idea that it is disrespectful to ask a coach what he thought of a rookie's NHL debut. Every coach in the league gets asked that question in this scenario. And it wasn't the first question he got asked.

Yeah I think positing that as a "disrespectful" question to ask is going all the way over to the other extreme. This is all beginning to give me a headache.

Massive nothing burger. I was surprised this is still being talked about.

that’s fair. I was comparing against the characterization of the answer. Fill in whatever word you like.
If that was the most important thing on the reporters mind after a huge win that says more about the reporter.

This board, which reporters follow to get a pulse on the mood of Flames fans, has spent the better part of a week complaining/debating about when Pelletier was going to make his NHL debut. The minute the kid stepped on the ice against the Lightning, you didn't need a degree in journalism to know that this was going to be a key storyline for any post-game story.
But you're saying that this beat reporter—whose FULL-TIME job is to cover the Flames—is a dick for having the audacity to ask the coach the most basic and obvious questions to get his take on the rookie's performance??
Did he expect that Sutter would gush with praise in response? Of course not. But he had to ask the question. That's. His. Literal. Job.
You don't have to like it. But you also don't have to watch the resulting Flames coverage either.

I guess you could hear the "what number is he?" comment and interpret it as "why are you asking about someone so inconsequential that I can't even remember his number?" rather than taking it at face value where he's looking at a game summary sheet that has the players listed by number and he can't find Pelletier's name.
The comment about him being 21 with a long way to go sounds positive to me. You don't say something like about a player who you don't think has a future.
The most-annoying thing about Francis is he spends the first half of his story complaining that Sutter's comments made it impossible for him to write the feel-good story about Pelletier's first game that he wanted to, then he spends the second half of the story writing that feel good story about Pelletier's first game with quotes from his teammates and such.
Also, his suggestion that Sutter sent Muller to do the presser on Friday because he didn't want to have to say positive things about Pelletier ahead of his first game is so ridiculous Francis should be embarrassed for even thinking it, especially when you consider Sutter spent a significant percentage of his presser on Tuesday speaking very highly of Pelletier.

He could just be better at his literal job if he wanted to avoid criticism/mockery from fans or be taken seriously by the coach.

Really? A rookies first game in which he was inconsequential (and that’s not bad for a 1st game btw) is going to be a ‘key’ story line? 7 mins where dude did not drown?
Not beating the lightening. The PK. Vladar? Dube’s clutch goal? Stopping a Slide?
Composure when the bolts scored? All of these are less important to a reporter than a ‘decent game’ quote about a rookie from Sutter.
I’d be surprised if anyone watches the resulting coverage. But hey if TSN makes their $4 off our market, go for it.

He is going to be the perfect line mate for Huberdeau. I know that. I went back and watched so much footage of Huberdwau last year to see what was working and why a 115 point player was suddenly looking to produce half that.
Pelletier checks every box. He's fast, he's intelligent and gets open, while aptly reading what his line mates are doing, and is a left shot. That is the exact type of player that Huberdeau needs to put up points. And he looked more than ready to read and get open at the NHL level in his first game.

No. But It’s the softball questions that Sutter loathes. Like this one.

I'm not going to say I love Salim's coverage, because I really don't. But I'm not going to begrudge the guy for asking the most obvious question on every reporter's mind. He just happened to be the first to ask the question.
Of course he knew Sutter wasn't going to like it. But that doesn't mean he shouldn't ask.
