Shapo looks like he's about to be broken here already. Gotta serve himself out of it. EDIT: Two straight UEs on cross-court forehands. This is not looking like it'll be close at this point.

I think Rafa is just playing him smart, getting these returns back to Denis's racket almost instantaneously. Denis needs to serve it out wide a lot more I think?
EDIT: LOL never mind don't listen to me, Rafa just smacks it into the corner. I have no idea what to do.

The forehand needs to be recalibrated.

There's no reason for these errors. Just gift after gift.

That first set by Rafa was very similar to the first set that Cilic played against Felix last night. The big difference being Rafa's level is unlikely to drop as much as Cilic's did.

I mean, he's right about the time violation and that Rafa should be given a warning. Not that the officials are "all corrupt". Clearly pretty frustrated with himself and trying to redirect that energy somewhere else.

How about Rafa be ready in position when Shapo is ready to serve, you're supposed to play at the server's pace.

Things are getting pretty crazy between the umpire and Shapovalov.
Shapo seems to be staring down the umpire between every serve.

I'm not sure what that was, the umpire just flipped at Shapo for looking at him? I know it's a carry over from what he said before, but if the player isn't talking to you, you don't need to say anything.

There's 8 seconds left in the play clock and Dennis was complaining. I understand why he's doing it but it comes off as whinnying to me. Even the ump was saying what do you want from me

He wasn't complaining though. He was just looking at him and the ump thought that meant he thought the ump should do something. Just do your job and ignore it unless the guy is talking to you, and if he is, handle it appropriately. I honestly think he could have reasonably given Denis a code violation for accusing him of being corrupt, but the second interaction was the chair's fault.

Nadal does play painfully slow.
But when you’re a legend you get the benefit of the doubt. No upside in this for Denis.

No way.
If you've ever officiated any sport you know when a player is challenging you.
Denis was and was rightfully put in his place.

I will agree that Shapo could have certainly received a code violation for calling the umpire corrupt, that was uncalled for.

This match is looking like an Opelka vs Isner match, both serving exceptionally well.

Disagree totally. Who gives a #### if he's "challenging" you if he's just standing there glaring? Let Nadal serve the ball. Chair should do everything possible to avoid getting in the way.
