Start Lazar on the 4th line with Stajan and Bouma. Protect him a bit for the first few games and make him force his way up the lineup.
We've missed that upward pressure this year.
He'll end up with Bennett soon enough

Yup. It's no longer 1,31,61.... it's now 1,32,63.... It's weird.

Lazar won't ever be a scorer, but if he reaches his ceiling, he will be a very significant contributor to a championship type team.
I see his floor as a Shean Donovan/Marcus Nilsson/Jannik Hansen type but his ceiling as a Dustin Brown/Alex Burrows/Brendan Gallagher type. The low end is a significant contributor, and the high end is an impact role player.
A future line of Tkachuk/Bennett/Lazar could be a real nightmare for opposition defences.

This.
Im really pumped on this deal. Im a sens fan as well and I have always seen him as the sens version of sven in the sense that he was mismanaged and poorly developed. I think he has a lower offensive ceiling than sven but a higher floor. He reminds me of a faster Tkachuk with less skill but a better defensive game. Similar style though.
I also agree that he really would compliment Tkachuk and Bennett extremely well if he pans out. If he reaches his potential he would be scary with Bennett and Tkachuk one day.
One thing that will help his chances here is the fact he is a great skater. Probably steps in and becomes one of our best skaters after johnny, brodie, backlund, dougie, frolik. I think thats something this team could use right now. He has a fantastic shot as well.
Best of all he could bump Chiasson out of the lineup and push brouwer to the 4th line until he finds his game. I can see Versteeg - Bennett - Lazar.
As someone who has watched Lazar play a lot, i have a really strong feeling that he will be a huge success here.

Lazar has a better defensive game than Tkachuk? Not a chance. Tkachuk at 19 is one of our best defensive players.

Not a chance? He was one of ottawas best defensove plagers at 19 as well. Tkachuk plays on a shutdown defensive line that has our 2 best skaters and PK forwards on it. He has played well defensively. I think Lazar has a better defensive game. Tkachuk didnt need to play defence in his one season in the OHL. Lazar did in his multiple seasons in the WHL. He can play C. He kills penalties. He has played around 200 games in the bottom 6 of an NHL team. He is a much better skater. I dont thing its crazy to say at this point in time Lazar may be a better defensive player than Tkachuk who is about 60 games into playing defence in his young career. God knows the london knights didnt challenge him to play defence. Also his draft comparables were bergeron and fisher.

I'd also like to see Kulak, Andersson, Kylington, Jankowski, Hathaway, Shinkaruk, Pribyl, and Klimchuk brought up for playoff depth.

Is that the most expensive fourth line in history?

His advanced stats are terrible too playing on the 4th line, so not sure what he's shown to be considered potentially good at defense, should be no where near our 3rd line.

Those are some pretty terrible teammates. If there is ever a point where a player like him shines or shows what he is about, its after being traded. I'm sure he will be eased in but given chances to play with better linemates.
I guess we shall see, but if things do workout at all, its extra good because it's long term.

I do think that Lazar also makes Calgary a more difficult team to play against. He has great wheels, he has a non-stop motor, he likes playing physical - Ferland, Tkachuk, Bennett, Lazar - all guys that are difficult to play against, all guys that will get in your face, all guys that will even drop the mitts.
The more I think about this addition, the more I start loving it. I looked at Lazar as probably a better prospect than Bo Horvat. He was a better goal-scorer, he was a much better skater, and he possessed all those intangibles that you look for in a prospect (leader, ramps it up in the big games, etc). Not saying he is going to be the next Horvat, or better or worse - just pointing out that he was the better offensive player, as well as possessing many (and more) of the intangibles that Horvat possessed.

Prediction : Lazar scores a goal in his game as a Flame!
I'll be putting some money on it.

Lazar has strong bust trajectory, giving 2nd round for him is too much. Dont like this trade.

Not sure Lazar was ever known to have the hockey sense that Horvat was known for? If Lazar is as close as smart as Horvat without the puck this was a total homerun but I suspect Lazar is a one trick pony with some nice jam.
I think it'll take 2-3 years to know what he really is.

I'd be happy to see him eased in on the 4th line. His acquisition gives us a few different options for how we ice that line.
A lot of people suggesting he should replace Chiasson on RW, but as they (Lazar and Chiasson) know each other from their time together in Ottawa there could be an argument for sitting Bouma (who has been ineffective), moving Stajan to LW & playing Lazar between Stajan & Chiasson.
Stajan – Lazar – Chiasson

I hope this change of scenery works out for Lazar. I'm a bit skeptical of this deal.
I know it's seen as a positive, but I get a little bit worried when one of the main things reporters/coaches mention about a player are his intangibles/personality. Bollig was a good teammate. Doesn't mean he was a good player.
I'm not sold that he's a player with a high floor. He's hasn't shown enough consistency at the NHL or AHL level to say that yet.
If I observe this trade in a bubble, a 2nd in a weak draft year isn't a terrible overpayment. I'll take this over a rental.
But I can't help but look at similar guys the Flames have traded/lost. Baertschi, Granlund and Byron. I'd take all three over Lazar. I know they were all unique situations, but they all had a more proven NHL track record when they become former Flames.

After sleeping over it and reading up a bit on Lazar, I like it a lot more than yesterday. Seems like a great character guy with a bit of edge to his game. If he could find some chemistry with Bennett, the deal could be a homerun.
