Yeah it's kinda sad how passionately involved we are in this but... yeah I will be smiling and celebrating all day whenever it happens.

The actual contract is going to be anticlimactic. Because it's going to be close to the term and dollars that everyone has been talking about all offseason, and it's going to be a number that neither side is crazy about but both sides can live with. And the reactions will be variations of "If that's what the final deal is, why wasn't it signed July 1!?"

Pretty much.
Yet still, it can't get signed soon enough.
As a fan I'll feel 200% better when Monahan and Gaudreau are physically on the ice skating with the rest of the team. Until then... there will be a little paranoia. Will be so important to get off to a strong start, as it was shown last season. More so with all the rivalry games to kick things off...

According to Greg Wyshynski, Artemi Panarin is looking for 6x6 in his next deal. Last year Panarin and Gaudreau put up almost identical numbers.
I wonder if Panarin's ask helps bring down Johnny's price?

With the end of the World Cup and all of the participating players returning to their NHL teams, Gaudreau watch will really kick into high gear now.

Oh man... the day the contract is signed, I'll go down to Safeway, wearing a Flames jersey, and buy a jumbo pak of Skittles.

Am I the only person that is completely unconcerned about this?
There is still 2 weeks to go until the season and it's not like Gaudreau hasn't played already this month so it's not like he'll be rusty.
It would be a different proposition if one side was wanting him for 6 mil and the other for 8+ or if one side wanted a 2 year deal and the other a 6 year deal. They are both probably in the 7-7.5 range for a long time 6-8 years. Just a matter of bridging the gap, which over the course of the deal is only 4 million dollars at most. Not a big deal all things considered.

I'm personally not concerned at all either. Seems like a waste of energy to worry about it at all. When he signs, I'll probably be happy, if he demanded a trade I'd probably be mad. Anything other than that is pure speculation by people not directly involved in the process, so until it goes one way or the other, I remain completely neutral.

Nope, I've stated I'm not worried about it at all several times in this and the older thread.
When people ask me about it in the real world I tell them I can't discuss it because 9 times out of 10 it's someone who's panicking and starts suggesting stupid trade scenarios or thinks Gaudreau has secretly demanded a trade or some other nonsense conspiracy theory. It frustrates me to hear and read some of the garbage people say about it, hence I tend to not read much of these threads, usually just a quick skim looking for Twitter updates or something.

1. The Kane/Panarin line got the best offensive situations, including PP, while Toews played a slightly more defensive role than normal.
2. The Hawks lost Sharp and Saad in the offseason leaving Toews with an aging Hossa and a windmill of garbage rotating throughout the season on his LW.
3. Fair to Kopitar too, but the hockey, betweem consistently deep playoff runs, and Team Canada events caught up with Toews a bit last year. I think from those that watch him regularly, Toews has a bit of an extra jump in his step during the World Cup compared to last season... I think an offseason of rest did him well.
Note that even during the past season, his possession stats when neutralized for QoC and linemates, he was still extremely effective. The offensive plays just weren't available like they have been in the past.
So, I think when you look at the entire picture of Toews' career, last season was a bit of a misnomer and put him in a position to fail offensively. Not a true dip in talent level as the sub 60 point season would lead you to believe. Offensively its a very neutral skillset with Kopitar.
Getting to defense, its really hard to point fingers either way. These guys are both considered Selke contenders every season. Toews plays the shutdown role for the best international team in the world, and does it consistently well. He's scored points in the role. And he's shutdown elite players consistently. If you are to argue in Kopitar's favour it would be a very, very small win.
Both great players. I just don't see the margin of difference that you are stuck on.
|
Just wanted to say, that was an amazing play by Toews to win the World Cup. He's a world class player, that was just another example on top of a hundred others.

I get the angst over the situation there's no doubt about that but I'm personally not worried. When you look at the situation in the simplest terms, Johnny's only leverage play is to withhold services. Is he really going to miss a half (or full) season of hockey and guaranteed millions? Not a chance.

Not to take too much away from your post, but we've got a brand new coach and systems this season. Many teams struggle out of the gate with these changes. Training camp and pre-season are pretty critical to getting everyone on the same page and ready to gel on opening night.

I'd rather have Johnny sit and miss regular season games than BT give him $8M/year.
If $8M is the hill Johnny chooses to die on, I say we trade him
Johnny + Wotherspoon for Simmons + Provorov + 1st round draft choice.
