Nope, that was for trading Iginla and Bouwmeester combined for less than the Jets got for Ladd that sunk the HMS Feaster.

He mentioned he didn't like his drafting for sure, but I don't know if he specified which draft. Many assumed it was the Jankowski draft, but that was when Sven was still the saviour. It later seemed evident that Burke isn't the biggest Baertschi fan, so maybe he didn't like Feaster's work in the first round.

Feaster didn't have the training to scout and evaluate players so from what I understand, he left the 2011 draft to Button (Baertschi, Granlund, Wotherspoon, Gaudreau, Brossoit). After that draft Weisbrod was hired and took charge of the 2012 draft (Jankowski, Sieloff, Gillies). I remember Burke complementing the 2013 draft (Monahan, Poirier, Klimchuk), so by process of elimination Burke was referring to the 2012 draft. Gillies, Kulak and Culkin do look decent as mid round picks though Jankowski and Sieloff still look like gambles to me.

I agree you can cross out the 2013 draft as I also remember him saying that he thought the Flames (and the rest of the staff in Anaheim) had the best draft that day.

However, I am not sure you can infer it was the 2012 based on that logic. Feaster allowed Button to handle the draft. Feaster allowed Weisbrod to handle that draft. The difference is the same I would say.

It may be a combination of both 2011 and 2012 for all we know.

I guess that's fair if he really didn't like the Baertschi pick. For myself, although undersized, Baertschi looked like a good pick until he started to run into concussion and maturity problems. The rest of our 2011 draft was outstanding.

The other thing that stood out to me is that they are running a middle six of Baertschi / Horvat / Virtanen - Vey / Granlund / Etem. Three things there. First, all of those guys are under 25, so they are actually going young (and McCann is playing 4C). Second, the third line is a pretty offensively oriented third line - that's not a grinding line by any stretch. Third, the entire Granlund line is made up of other teams' discarded prospects.

As bad as the Canucks management is, and I think they lost this trade, they actually are setting themselves up to rebuild, at least at forward. The problem, of course, is they have no potential first line center anywhere on the horizon. They're about to be pretty bad for a couple of years, which should yield a few consecutive top 10 (and possibly top 5) picks, so maybe there is some sort of plan here - if they did luck into Matthews, they'd be well on their way.
I mean sure.. they have some young guys. But that 3rd line is guys who aren't all that young (in the sense that they should be expected to take big steps up) and aren't producing at all (Etem - 8 points, Vey - 11 pts and sent down for a while, Granlund - 8 points and sent down a while).
