They were checked in at the start of the trip, which means Greyhound's system should be smart enough to figure it out. Someone dropped the ball big time, and I don't blame the passengers.

I am assuming that the parent knew full well the ticket was expired, but didn't tell the person at the start of the trip, hoping they wouldn't notice. They then figured it was ok and they had got away with it.

Seems like CBC is doing its best to make a bigger issue out of it than it needs to be. Mentioning the 12 year old before the 16 year old. 20 km away from the Highway of Tears? You mean the 750 km road that spans the province?

"16 Year Old Babysits Sister For a Couple Hours at Bus Station Because Parent Messed Up Date" doesn't have the same ring to it.

I agree that Greyhound should have had something preventing them from getting on the bus in the first place, but this isn't an article that compares to anything else in this thread.

Technically I think the Highway of Tears is the portion of Highway 16 that lies between Prince George and Prince Rupert. Valemont is ~300km away.

I can understand why everybody involved would be terrified if that happened. That said, Google Streetview of the area doesn't look that bad. It's not like out of some horror movie, it's pretty much HWY1 through Golden or Revelstoke.

I'm not sure, as a bus driver, how you could look at these 2 girls in the middle of the night, and just say to bad so sad, get off the bus. I'd do everything in my power to make sure they were safe. I guess that's what bothers me most.

You mean like going out of his way to ensure they would reach their destination by getting them accommodation on the next available bus and having the personnel at the greyhound stop keep an eye on them? Because that's what happened.

I didn't see the part of the story where someone was keeping an eye on them? Not in the CBC story, anyway.

The CBC story seems kind of click-baity and sensationalist.

Unfortunately, that's the way the CBC is going these days - and the Globe & Mail, and every other mainstream media outlet. I understand they're desperate to attract an audience in a very difficult climate. But mainstream media should focus on the things they can offer that online bloggers and click-bait sites can't, like sober, thorough, balanced reporting. Trying to beat sensationalistic digital media at their own game is only going to hasten the decline of traditional media.

I look a bit more at the bus-story, and my thought is "What do you mean, a 16 and a 12yo can't sit by themselves in a 24hr gas station/restaurant/bus stop? What sort of helicopter parenting is this?"

Guess I have a different perspective since I've done that several times myself after my parents split up and my brother and I bussed between them. Would just pull out the book and wait, NBD.

Situation tends to read a bit different when it's 16 and 12 year-old girls vs. 16 and 12 year-old boys.

oh France.....

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35994755

Quote:
A Paris tribunal has ruled that calling a male hairdresser a "######" is not homophobic - "because hair salons regularly employ gay people".
The case relates to an employee at a salon who was fired after failing to turn up for work while sick.
His boss accidentally sent him a text using the slur, so the hairdresser took him to an employment tribunal claiming unfair dismissal.
Quote:
the tribunal said: "If we put it in the context of the field of hairdressing, the council considers that the term '######' used by a manager cannot be considered as a homophobic insult, because hair salons regularly employ gay people, notably in female hairdressers, and that poses no problem at all."

Not really. If they were standing outside of a closed down gas station for hours on end, sure. That's a problem.

They can sit inside the restaurant with staff there just as well as anyone else could.

It's not like they were kicked out and standing on the side of the road waiting for the next bus, they were in a well lit, warm, bus depot style place, where staff were also keeping an eye on them. This is a non-story.

Oh I agree. I'm just saying for the purpose of sensationalizing the story.

That doesn't mean it's OK to call someone that, but as far as I know, it's not illegal.

I liked this thread better when it was stupid crap that was getting posted, not disturbing rape and murder stories.

So here's a fun one. This photo is racist says the internet:

Spoiler!

In case you're looking for a hooded kkk member or subtle confederate flag, don't waste your time. The racism is that the white girl is resting her arm on the black girl's head. You know, because black people are always propping up the whites and whites, even kids, know that black people are no better than arm rests.

Oh right, except that they sisters. Seriously, those two girls in the middle are sisters. But hey, when I've already unlocked the shed to gather my pitchfork there's gonna be a witch hunt, it doesn't matter what information comes to light after. Or how stupid the witch hunt was to begin with.

Naturally Gap has apologized and pulled the ad.

Was there another article that said they were inside somewhere? I know lots of small towns just use a gas station or something for a bus stop, and I kinda assumed they were left outside a closed one or something, not inside a restaurant or bus stop.
