My guess (I haven't seen it actually explained) is this: the trade for Thad Young would not work on its own: Minnesota would be receiving significantly more salary than they are giving up. But by bundling it as part of the Love deal, they get credit for the fact that they're giving up a lot of salary in the other side of the trade without taking much back.
Now, they could just execute the Love trade, which creates a big trade exception, then use the trade exception to acquire Young. This is where it gets really complicated, but there are rules that make it more difficult to trade multiple players along with a trade exception. By treating it as a simultaneous trade, they can send Philly multiple players along with a trade exception.
