I know Yzerman hasn't shied away from taking Russians, even those playing overseas during his time as GM. With a 5th-10th pick I doubt Tampa would overlook him because of the Russian factor, but might turn their attention to a more pressing need at the draft with a defensemen like Nurse.

And obviously Washington has the whole Ovechkin thing going for them.

But if Columbus has soured on Russians because of Filatov and Zherdev, maybe they overlook him with their pick. And if the other teams chose to go with less of a risk players as well, is there a chance he drops down to say around the 15th range or is he just too good?

If there's a chance I really hope the Flames try and move up with Pitt's 1st and whatever else they can to try and get him. A high risk, high reward player like that is exactly what you should be gambling on during a rebuild in my opinion.
The Russian factor is extreme with Nichushkin. He still has 2 more years on his KHL deal.

I don't see any team picking top 5 risking him. That pick just means too much to these teams.

What are the odds of us getting the number one pick in the 28th overall spot?

Yup, the KHL deal will likely keep him out of the top 10.

My dream is that he slides into the 15-20 range. Unlikely, but if he did, that's where it would make sense to use the Pitt pick and trade down (up?) to grab Nichushkin.

If we can acquire another 1st, in the 20-25 range (they can't both win the cup), we could possibly use the two picks to slide down (up?) enough to get him.

It has been my dream for the past couple months that the Flames get MacKinnon with the 2 or 3 pick and then have Nich fall to a mid-round pick.

MacKinnon
Jankowski
Nichushkin

C problem solved

(or Nichushkin can play RW - that works too)

If we finish 28th:

1st: 14.2%
2nd: 0%
3rd: 43.8%
4th: 42%

If we finish 28th, it guarantees a top 4. But I want a guaranteed top 3 so we need to finish 29th

This sucks, two games against the Oilers.

I am just going to cheer for the Flames to not win and for Hall, Eberle etc to be pummeled severely by McGrattan.

However, at the end of the day if we lose both these upcoming games, we basically almost guarantee a top 5 pick and the Oilers will get the 14th pick (they ain't making the playoffs)

Unless they win the draft lottery. Again.

The first overall could be worth more than usual, I think the Avs are definitely tanking for Jones, the "hometown boy", whoever gets the first overall could probably extract an extra asset out of the Avs to move down one or two spots.

Oilers are only 1 point out, let's all hope they make it in so they don't have a ball in the entry draft lottery.

As much as I hate watching the Flames lose, I hate the thought of them losing to the Oilers even more. Go Flames.

Nope, we will go into the draft with 3-4 first rounders and 2-3 second rounders and already we will be ahead of the Oilers as we still have guys like Glencross, Hudler, Wideman, Giordano for leadership and guys ready to make the step to the NHL in Horak and Baertschi.

If we keep a couple of players and use the cap space wisely in the offseason, I can see us competing for the playoffs in 2 seasons.

This all depends on how we use our assets because at the time, the Oilers didn't have a crazy lot after Smyth

I thought the Flames had a really good team on paper after signing Hudler, Wideman and Cervenka, and with Baertschi joining the team. I thought for sure they would contend for a playoff spot.

I've learned my lesson, no more counting our eggs before they've hatched.

I am not saying those guys are superstars. I am just saying if we play our cards RIGHT, we can end the rebuild quick

Well they're all fine players but not really what we needed.

Galchenyuk was hurt for pretty well his entire draft year... so hard to say they played on the same line.

I don't have near as much of a hate against the Oilers as most around here do. Though I was born and raised in Calgary and am a lifelong Flames fan, I've lived in Edmonton and enjoyed my time there.

When the Flames went on their run in '04, that city supported the Flames as much as any other. It was awesome driving down the number 2 alongside dozens of other vehicles proudly waving Flames flags, honking and cheering out the windows all the way to Calgary to be a part of the game 6 festivities.

And then in '06, it was a blast being in Edmonton for their Cup run.

That said, I'd have a major issue with them getting another no. 1 pick, especially at the expense of the Flames.
