Holy ####. The more I play this game. The worse it gets. Point blank Crosby, wide open net, will never score. Garnet Exelby, from any point shot on the blue line, will score 70% of the time. What a broken piece of crap this game is.
Oh. and an easy way to score a goal if you are down, cross the blue line, drag the puck and shoot short side from the top of the circles, its a goal every time, just like NHL12.
I find myself being frustrated that I just can't find a way to score online, especially in EASHL.
It's so damn hard to get in a good shooting position, and when I finally get a shot off, it does nothing. Most of the time somebody will get a magically pokecheck on me and send the puck flying.

Happened last night during the second game with the CP team on xbox. Less than halfway through the first period, we were down 3-0.
So after having played a couple versus games online I have come to the conclusion that this version is even more broken than previous games.
The pokecheck is way too effective. It's ridiculous how effective it is.
The goalies are also broken. A 2-0 cross crease should work most of the time, goalies aren't lightning bolts. It seems EA has punished people who get 2-1's and 3-1's and 2-0's, because the goalies will almost 99% of the time save it.
Also, didn't EA say that you can just shoot and score in this game?
I played a game where Iggy came down the wing 5 times and each time Corey Crawford either saved it or he shot it wide. Really?
You must not watch much hockey.

Maybe it's not the game that's broken? I've had numerous games where I could snipe pass the goalie cause I was getting get ice positioning, and then others where the defense wasn't giving much of anything, and then when I do get space, the goalie plays strong that game.
Every game is different. Not every shot is automatically gonna be a goal from anywhere you shoot. Otherwise every game would be 8-7 type of affairs, and that's not fun. The AI is tougher this year and along with skating making the game more challenging, we gotta adapt and get use to it. Naturally you should be converting more on your chances over time.
The game being more challenging doesn't mean it's broken.

I play be a gm with a buddy, and we started out season with a pretty good team and our first 5 games were 1 goal wins or losses, 3 going to OT, 1 going to the shootout.
Then we played a team with less than stellar defense and we won 5-1. Played one of the good teams again, another nail biter.
This is probably the best sports game I've ever played.
Every game, thus far, is unique. I freakin' LOVE scoring goals five-hole.
My thoughts too, game feels much more like real hockey.
You can't run around out of position. You can't turn every zone entry into a two on one. You have to set real hockey plays up. In no way do I think the game is broken. Bad players just don't know how to get the cheap and ready goals anymore.
I'm one of those guys that likes picking top corner short side, but played a game where the goalie wasn't giving it to me and saved it everytime, so I had to adapt, and started doing more with it, made the extra pass to try and open someone up. Jobo finally won it in double ot after we outshot them almost 3 to 1. It was a fun game. I love this year's version. My fear is that they start to tune it to much and it turns into 12 with a new skating engine.

Ok, I admit it. I have no clue how to play defense. In past iterations of this game, if a winger carries the puck across the blue line, I would step up with the d-man and drill him every time. It was boring and silly, but effective. If I attempt to do that with NHL 13, I miss the guy and give up yet another 2 on 1. So, fancying myself as a brilliant virtual hockey mind, I figure I will just sit back and try to poke check like a mad man. Again, I get walked around like a pylon. It could be that I am getting old, but the AI forwards are too fast and shifty for me to keep up with.
Can anyone give some advice on how to effectively play defense?
The thing that is mainly bothering me about this game is it seems the AI never gets penalties called against. Like, blatant interference ones. But then I get called for high sticking almost every time I try to lift a stick. Grrrr...

Angles. You need to control the gaps this year and pretty much wait for them to come to you. Angle them to the outside, and cover the middle of the ice, if they cut towards you you can take it away. If you get to aggressive your going to get burned. If you have backside help and your team mates are backchecking hard then maybe you can step up. This year, like real hockey, I find it's more about just keeping them in front of you, forcing them to the outside, controlling your gaps, and taking away the high scoring areas. If you get caught chasing your screwed. It works for me when I play defense.

I've found myself gnawing at the controller in anger a few times this year also. At the time, you always think it's because the game must be crap, but it eventually becomes apparent that it's due to the challenge inherent within the game's realism. Things like controlling your players momentum to ensure you don't get beat on the back-skate as the opposition enters your zone as well as having to often cycle the puck in the offensive zone are fantastic, in my opinion.
One huge aspect that needs remedy for NHL12 players.
Forget L2.
I very rarely use it now, and when I do, I don't use it in nearly the same way. Instead of holding it for 90% of the game like I used to, I now use it sparingly, in a 'tapping' sort of way.
Think of the degrees with which you used to hold the pass button, and that's roughly the the time frame I'll hold L2. Quick taps for quick movements, squeeze it a bit longer to prepare for the one-timer.
