Not only that, (and I hate to bring this up again, I really do) but imagine if the return for Phaneuf would have ended up being one of the guys on this list as well (like Huberdeau or Bjugstad for example, had Sutter dealt Dion to Florida for Horton and a 1st or something), instead of what we ended up with.
We'd have a pretty stacked prospect pool ATM.
Gah! Oh well.

It has started to arrive in mail boxes for the dozen or so people that actually still have a THN subscription. It should be on shelves the week after next.
I got the top 20 list from "that other board".

I'd hate to see Kipper in a leafs jersey but I could see them over paying to get him. What other teams need a goalie that bad?

The hawks don't have a top end prospect do they? The Flyers have too much invested in Bryz and the Caps are a perfect fit for Kuznuts (if he even does come over). I think Kipper can land someone on that list. and then we go after a young goalie with potential like Lehner (ya right) or Lindback

Dougie Hamilton will a force in the future. If the Flames can somehow land him I'd be pumped.

Florida would likely not have interest in Kipper because they have Markstrom waiting in the wings - and he could be ready as soon as next year.
The market for Kipper would be quite limited in my view. Toronto may be the best fit.
Kipper for Colborne+Monster+salary dump.

I don't think even a bad first round exit makes Hamilton expendable, Chiarelli has made it clear that Hamilton is not available. Things can change pretty fast but the reality is the Bruins see Hamilton as a #1 D, the future anchor of the blueline after Chara, and they expect him to be among the best D in the game. Iginla is one of my favorite players of all-time, I've got a Flames jersey with his name on it, but he's not worth Hamilton now to the Bruins. The Bruins are too young for Iginla to have that kind of value, in the sense that the young core they have could be a threat to win for years, especially if Hamilton reaches his potential. Why throw that away for a couple years of adding Iginla to a team that is already very high scoring? Colborne was expendable because The Bruins have plenty of centres, he wasn't going to displace Bergeron, Krejci, or Seguin (who would move to centre if one of the other two are out), but there's nothing stopping Hamilton from joining the team as soon as he earns it, maybe as soon as next year.

that's the benefit of having pro-active management, granted, it likely turned out much better than they ever imagined.

I sure hope we can do better than:
"The smooth skating, 6’5 center, has soft hands, good vision and a wicked release. He oozes potential, but his impact on games at the AHL level varies dramatically.'
That sounds like plenty of players that have come through town in the last 10 years.

I think your expectations for the return can fetch may be unrealistic. He is in the final years of his career most likely, and goalie value is always weird.
Colborne will be a player in the NHL - I think most likely a solid 2nd line centre. He hasn't looked over his end in limited NHL action.

I'm a subscriber and haven't got mine yet. Grrrrr.
Sven would be in my top 10 as well but IMO two straight non-productive juniors (injury factored in) have probably influenced his ranking. Zibanejad is more NHL ready but I don't think he's got Sven's skillset. Scheifele was a bit of a high risk pick in that he came out of nowhere to put up very good numbers on a bad team and had a great NHL preseason but his OHL stats aren't exactly eye popping.

Who knows, if we hadn't made the Jokinen trade (the first one), perhaps we wouldn't have picked that high (or Phoenix rather).
Hopefully, Sven turns out and Iggy can pass the torch to someone. Sure would be nice.
Don't write Backlund off yet, hopefully he gets over his injuries and with a coaching change, he can finally take that next step forward. We're due for a break...right?

If you think sven is soft, just take a look at RNH. Very small , and quite skinny guy. Still produces. I have high hopes for him , but don't rush him. Theres a better chance the reinhart will start playing for the flames next season.

Reading this thread it sounds as if this kid is going to be as good as Gretzky.

Honest question, because I can't remember:
Were Flames fans as excited about Backlund or Fata or Chucko, etc. as they are about Sven?

No.
There was a lot of questioning of the wisdom behind drafting Fata and Chucko. Backlund, on the other hand, generated quite a bit of excitement because of his performance at the World Juniors and in Kelowna's Memorial Cup run, but not as much as Sven has.

Folks around here may be in for a bit of a disappointment with Sven. Hopefully I'm wrong. IMO the Flames will need to play him with a power forward to open up the ice a bit.
Unfortunately, it'll probably be a few years though before we can get a taste of whether or not he's lived up to expectations.
