I think he meant it would have been a game changer if the flames were able to sign Tavares- but perhaps I read it wrong. The point being that while it is nice to think about, it had very little probability of ever coming to fruition.
And that is true, but dare to dream, right? Maybe Pietrangelo's like Brouwer and has no actual ties to Calgary but likes it enough to build a retirement home in.

Sorry, maybe I misunderstood.
That's true about any player. They have their own motivations, and it's not always about the bright lights of the big city. I always use this argument in terms of favoring a trade for PK Subban. The guy is a media star, but he would do anything for Lindsay Vonn, and she would be over the moon to be right next to Banff.

Maybe not - they just bought a place in Beverly Hills for $6.75M in May. It’s not to be closer to his arena, that’s for sure.

I was wondering in term of depth would any of you like to see a guy like Frolik back for 1 year $1M. I think he could be a great depth forward at that price(minus his agent).

Nah, we don't need another LHS winger. We need centers, goalies, 1 or 2 at most RHD and RHS wingers. Really the last thing the Flames need is a re-tread.
Folik was awesome years 1 to 3, then became irrelevant when Mangiapane and Dube came along.

I wouldn't hate Frolik coming back at all as long as it was cheap. But I don't know if his agent would be keen on him coming back.
Still, a good little player who can play anywhere. Nothing wrong with that.

If we spend all our money on two of the big three free agents and he wants to play on the fourth line without whining about it.
If Blake Comeau can play on a Stanley cup team, Frolik would be fine for cheap veteran depth.

Frolik is 32 and has really taken a step back in his play the last two years. So no.

After the way Frolik's tenure ended here, it probably would not be a good idea to bring him back.
If we bring any former Flame back for 1x1, Derek Grant would be a solid choice.
Also looking at free agents with ties to Tree, Maloney or Ward, there is Taylor Hall (Ward), Brad Richardson (Maloney), Brian Boyle (Ward), Beau Bennett (Ward), Brain Gibbons (Ward). There may be others that I missed.

It would be so odd to see Derek Grant return given how totally unremarkable he was on his last turn here. I don't know what happened to him down in Anaheim but he's become a surprisingly effective player.
Not many forwards make it to their fifth team before scoring their first NHL goal. But Derek Grant did exactly that (going goalless in Ottawa, Calgary, Buffalo, and Nashville before finally scoring 12 with the Ducks in 2017-18), and now he looks like a decent third-line centre at age 30. Sort of like a discount version of Derek Ryan -- and that honestly might be something that this team needs, if Ryan is on his way out the door.

Derek Grant's 5v5 relative stats were -10.0 or worse across the board this year, whereas Ryan has always had decent, if not good 5v5 relative stats.
If anything, Grant would be sort of like a discount version of the discounted version of Ryan's discounted version.

Hey look! An actual trade tumor.
Jimmy Murphy is a step above (or below) eklund. But with Vancouver trying to remake their d and lose cap, here’s what jimmy boy is reporting. Could history repeat itself and virtanen blossoms like Neely did after being traded from hometown team? Probably not but one never knows.

Wow. You're right, Austin, those are abysmal.
If I may, one thing about Grant that also sticks out to me is his ludicrous defensive zone deployment. His 5v5 offensive zone faceoff percentage in Anaheim this year was an eye-popping 21.79%, by far the lowest figure on the Ducks and one of the lowest in the league. The only everyday NHLers with a lower percentage of oZFs this year were Jay Beagle, Tyler Motte, Nick Shore, Colton Sceviour, and Freddy Gauthier. All of those guys had similar xGF% to Grant's 39.14%.
Normally I don't look at oZF% but when it's that extremely slanted I think it has to be considered, especially given that Grant's numbers have never ever been that bad.

Grant only played a handful of games for the Flames, not enough to get a feel for him in the NHL. With Stockton though he was fantastic.
