It made sense when there was the courting period to have it not extend into free agency but with the courting period gone you're asking the player to make a choice and actually hurts the current team potentially.

Teams could let their UFA’s talk to other teams ahead of The deadline if they like, thereby accomplishing the same thing.

Okay, but I don't think there is any way this could then be judged to be "fake." given that both sides are negotiating, we already know that Gaudreau wants to be here.

If they lose Gaudreau they are going to be rebuilding. Just a matter of how long they try and drag it out for before starting. Gaudreau leaving will be a chain reaction of other players doing the same most likely. And you can only tread water for so long. Hopefully they have enough sense to be proactive but I wouldn't count on it.

No better time to tank than this year with a potentially generational talent up for grabs. We can get Connor vs Connor in the BoA!!

I still don’t believe that Johnny will leave and sign with another team. He’s staying in Calgary and will remain a Flame.
There’s just no news, Friedman today even was very vague and didn’t really have much to say other than what’s been posted in this thread. I get the 13th is when things will start moving but Gaudreau is staying here is my bet.

I suspect the negotiations will go down to the last minute as the Gaudreau camp tries to extract as many dollars as they can from the Flames.

Watch Johnny blow everyone's minds and sign a one year $900,000 contract with the Flames for Sutter's final contract year. The Flames retain their key RFAs and add an impact player through a trade en route to winning the Stanley Cup. Johnny is seen buying moving boxes at Home Depot. This cannabis is fantastic.

Not trying to feed the troll or be a troll, but this organization haven't had the kind of success to warrant talking #### about other franchises.
Anyone can talk #### about the Oilers, or any other franchise for that matter, so don't stop if you don't want to. But coming from fans of this franchise, trash talking other franchises feels a bit...hollow.
2 (or 3) series wins since 2004 is not anything to write home about. Honestly, unpopular opinion here, but I don't think we are THAT much better than the Oilers, now or historically.
I'll still cheer for this team though.

Well, you're not wrong. It's just not the Flames way. They will claw their way as high as possible. This franchise has never done anything the easy way.

Since we haven’t heard a Malkin type announcement, I take it to mean the Flames still have hope of signing him tomorrow.

The Flames contract with Johnny officially ends at 12:00AM EST Wednesday morning. At that stage they no longer own his rights and they can no longer offer him an 8 year contract.

When you realise that none of this means anything other than what you bring to it and you prioritise having a good time above all else, you could end up in a situation where the Flames fold and the Oilers win 40 cups in a row and trashing the Oilers would STILL feel beautiful and fulfilling.
Hollow? Nah. Unless someone is paying you to be objective about hockey, you’re doing it wrong.
