At what distance are tips considered "tips"?

The courses we regularly play vary from 6400 to 7800 from the back tees. I'd have a lot different opinion from who should play depending on the definition.

For me...The tips are always the farthest back tees...

Regardless of the yardage.

He's right though. The blacks at Muirfield up in Lyalta are 6300 yards and the next ones up are like 600 yards shorter. No way I'm playing from any other boxes up there but the tips, almost as unlikely as me playing from the 7400 yard boxes at Redwood.

You can dramatically change the course you are playing by varying the tee boxes. Guys/seniors/juniors (I am guessing) are more likely to play the appropriate tee boxes because they aren't red/yellow/pink; they are just IV or V.

My game is going very well right now. I birdied one hole and just missed a birdie putt on the next hole. On the following hole I put my drive in the water and then took three attempts to get out of the green side bunker. Classic Squiggs.
Slice on 3 into the Fraser river?

Tips are the farthest back, which might be black on most course, or gold if there's a championship distance.

Well, yeah.

I was curious on where everyone drew the line on tees that are too long for a typical recreational golfer. I don't think you'd ever hear someone saying "look at those idiots playing the tips" at a 6200 yard course.

At what distance does it start looking sketchy? 6500? 6700? over 7000?

A lot of typical low to mid 80s players who haven't got too old to lose their distance yet will generally play the tees that par matches the course rating. That's generally around 6600-6700 for a par 72 around here. That would be the tips on a lot of courses, but doesn't seem too obnoxious.

Play whatever tees you want.

The only thing that matters is keeping pace.

Playing the correct tees will help keep pace. But the responsibility is to keep pace.

In my opinion anyway.

I think it's basically if the tee boxes you are playing are more than 6500 yards and you're shooting above 100 you should probably move up to the next box. But like everything in golf there are exceptions to every rule.

I almost had a golfers worst nightmare today, my buddy and I booked a last minute round this morning. He had to bail and I ended up being a solo (which was fantastic and groups were great about letting me play through).

On the first par 3 I hit my tee shot and it was tracking damn straight at the pin. I saw 2 bounces and thank god it skimmed by the hole. Line was dead on but it rolled 4’ past the pin.

I was mortified I got my first hole in one as a solo and no witnesses.

That seems reasonable. I've noticed more and more courses not even putting out markers past 65-6600 these days, even though they have them rated and on their scorecard. I'd guess that works fairly well to keep all but the legitimately competitive golfers from playing the real tips.

I usually just hit the tree on the 3rd hole. Which side of the tree I hit determines whether it goes into the river, onto the fairway, or right back at me. Hitting the tree is certain, but where it goes after is anyone's guess.

Yeah it's probably a correlation more than causation kind of thing.

If you are watching guys make a mess out of every hole, and driving back and forth looking for each others balls and bringing each other clubs, and the other guys are just chatting in their cart while all this is happening, and wait to start their whole messy routine until the others are done... and then do god knows what once they are around and on the green... they are probably playing the wrong tee box, but moving them up 20 yards a hole isn't going to change anything!

Hey no worries at all!! It’s cool to hear thoughts and opinions on Northview from a CPer! It’s been a fantastic experience working on the grounds, we’ve done a ton of projects through the winter and the courses are starting to get dialed in! Happy golfing season all!!

Came close to my first ace today.
Was tracking right at the pin and ran out of steam about 4 inches from the cup.
Greens were just punched and rolling slower today, otherwise what could have been...

Big changes at The Winston this year. Clubhouse construction is under way and our “temporary village” is setup.

Sounds like asbestos abatement is nearly complete and demolition starts this week.

I haven't been out there yet this year but if they have that cart path closed beside the clubhouse how do you get down to the course now? Is the upper putting green still there?

It’s a bit of a hassle. Both putting greens are still available. To get to the first tee you walk north slightly from the parking lot essentially ahead of the first tee. It’s not ideal, but it works okay.

Picked up an AI Smoke mini driver this morning & used it on the course right away. Tested it in place of my driver the whole round, though idea is to replace 3wood.

Definitely way easier off the tee than my 3wood and much more forgiving than my driver.
Yardage averaged between those 2 clubs; about 25 less average than my driver.
Hit about 4 more fairways than usual over my round and missed fairways were just off too.
Initial reaction very positive.
