Hypothetical question, but what if JG says that the 8th year doesn't mean anything, and he just wants to see what other offers are out there before making a decision. Do you pivot right away, or do you wait a couple of weeks for him to circle back giving the Flames a chance to match any offer?

They have to pivot, if Gaudreau does become a UFA.

Flames have to pursue their next option.

Nah, there is probably not more money out there. If he doesn’t sign 8 yrs by the deadline, he is gone. He wants to go home.

We all know what’s really going to happen. He’s going to go to Vegas.

The next option is to not spend big money on another UFA. So yes, they can absolutely wait.

Interesting question. I'll counter your question. If he becomes a free agent why would he circle back to the Flames and give them a chance to match any offer? If he wanted to sign with the Flames I would think he would have taken the 8th year, the max amount of money, and call it a win? If we don't see something in the next 24 hours it means Johnny's made his decision and is going east. He may wait for someone to make some moves to free up some cap space before signing, but it will signal he's gone.

Well, Burakovsky is going to free agency is he not? Friend of Rasmus? Pretty good second liner. Something to look at if Gaudreau bolts.

Yea great complimentary piece , but he doesn’t replace our 1st line 110 or winger spot sadly.
If Johnny’s gone it’s time to look at a rebuild, maybe not as scorched earth as Chicago but let’s do it the right way.

We are not going to rebuild and Johnny will still be a Flame next year. All is on schedule.

Athletic has an article about where he would fit on the Islanders. It's always more fun when these articles come out about players for other teams that may be available lol.

Also, a head coach with no NHL head coaching experience.

After all the talk about how Darryl pushed him to raise his game, would he want to go back to a rookie head coach?

I see some Islander fans who are convinced Johnny is signing with them and it makes no sense. They have an overpaid medicore roster and just fired their HOF coach. Lou will make him get a buzz cut. I just can’t see it.

Philly makes sense because it is his hometown, his wife’s hometown, his good buddy Kevin Hayes is there, Torts is probably a plus for Johnny based on how he plays with hard nosed coaches but they just don’t have the cap space and have to make multiple moves that could result in weakening an already weak roster.

Jersey likely makes the most sense. 2 good centers locked into deals, many other strong prospects in the system and cap space to make moves happen.

Calgary still makes the most sense for hockey reasons, money reasons, legacy, comfort, but the worst option for being close to home

How many teams can realistically afford Johnny's roughly 10M+ cap hit?

1) NJD from a cap perspective makes the most sense. They have about $25M in cap with only Bratt as the other major piece to sign. They also have a ton of flexibility next year. That team will be dangerous in a few years, but Johnny's gotta realize there won't be a ton of winning in the next number of years.

2) NYI have the space right now to do it, although they'll be in a bit of a bind next year once Barzal needs to be reupped. The roster doesn't look as promising as NJD though.

3) Philly has 118k in projected cap. They would need to clear, at a bare minimum, two of: Provorov, JVR and Konecny. I just don't see it happening.

Will be interesting to see what happens. From a fan perspective, Johnny going to NJ would be the most entertaining. Johnny, Hughes, Bratt, Hischier, Mercer and Sharangovich up front is pretty elite. They've got a ton of potential on D as well.

I think their next job should be locking up Tkachuk long term - or dealing him. They can’t let it slide like they did with Gaudreau.
