i did a ride out to UBC and back, route is on strava, i can try to dig it up later. Also you can ride up stanley park, it's quite beautiful, especially early in the am, also on strava. there's a bike pathway that follows all around downtown vancouver. you have to go slower because there is quite a bit of bicycle and foot traffic, but it's a nice ride.

Speaking of nice rides...I was in Kimberley and we road the rails to trails from there to Cranbrook and back. About 50km, nice to be in the trees on a road bike with no vehicles. Not the most pleasant ending with a 10km climb, but it's an old rail grade so not steep. Worth doing if you are out that way. Pro tip. Start in Cranbrook, and the climb is in the middle of the ride. Watch out for deer!

How about routes? I'll be on the bike ~5 hours so I don't mind mix of path and road. I'm mostly interested in exploring the city and surrounding areas than doing a long road ride.

When are you here? Depending on dates, we can go riding together if you want. Or I can point you in the right direction. I assume I know who you are based on the CP strava group. You can PM me if interested.
As for renting a bike it depends on where you are staying and/or want to go. I'd recommend BSP Bikes on Pacific or Spokes on West Georgia. There's also English Bay bike rentals, but I don't know anyone who's ever used them.

The sea wall sucks for cycling. There are so many bikes lanes and roads that are a block or two over that are much better options. Stanley Park is awesome for riding, as long as you are there before the tourists get there. They paved the roads a few months ago, so now the surface is about the best in town. There aren't any lights which is great, and you get a good mix of scenery, climbing, and just cruising. My cycling group does a lap of it and then heads to UBC three times a week. I'll usually do some laps in the park on a weekend morning, and I did 10 consecutive laps about 6 weeks ago.

does anybody have any advice on how to get rid of eye blinding sweat. Have had it two mornings in a row. Maybe just wear a bandana on the way in?
Thanks in advance.

I wear bandanas for all of my rides, I'm pretty sure they make riding specific ones but simple banada keeps my eyes mostly dry.

iover the past few years i started to find that the sweat in my yes was burning my eyes (and the goggles did nothing), so i purchased some sweat buster thing off of the internet:
http://www.traxfactory.com/ it worked ok.
hovever, i found for me and my melon that a sweat band from lululemon worked better. it is a little bit uncomfortable at first; however, i have gotten used to it and it keeps the sweat out of my eyes
i only wear mind when i am mtn biking as my effort level is way harder.

Ridley's is having a road bike and accessories sale right now. Some decent deals to be had. https://www.ridleys.com/
Passed 5000km on the year this morning. Still about 300km behind pace to make 10000km on the year but I should hopefully make up for that by the end of the month.

Saw a guy riding in with his dreads dangling inches from his rear wheel. I couldn't decide if he kept his dreads just short enough for that, if it was a coincidence, or if the spokes have been trimming them for him. Either way...ewww.

Yesterday on the way home as I passed somebody he yelled "your headlight is on!"
Do you guys not ride with your headlight on during the day? I have mine set to strobe and have it pointed 30 degrees down as to not blind anybody. And I think the cars see me better for it.

No, I don't use my headlight in the summer, unless it is raining. And I certainly don't use strobe ever. It really doesn't make you more visible, is useless for illuminating, and just annoys and blinds people. No to strobe!

What kind of negligent ne'er-do-well doesn't put an end cap on a cable, allowing it to fray like that? SMH.

I haven't been riding with a headlight since April maybe. If i am riding in traffic I will turn my taillight on regardless of time of day.

I'm not familiar with bike racks. What style would I need for a hatchback? I drive a Mazda 5.
