Dunno if you fly Continental a lot, but in case you don't... they're b@stards for seriously overbooking their flights. On your way back, don't show up last minute, or you might not have a seat. They did this to me in Houston once, with a friggin' hurricane approaching.

You are allowed to bring a reasonably sized laptop bag to carry your laptop, in which you can put other stuff. That being said they won't let you fill it to the brim with things but if you're reasonable about it you'll be fine. I flew to the US yesterday and that's what I did, but not many people brought anything on the flight.

The Air Canada flights into Sydney for $1270 USD look like the cheapest to me.

There's a lot of variance from place to place and time to time it seems. I'm flying to NYC tomorrow and am preparing to just carry my laptop in my hand. According to the Air Canada site you'll be allowed to check a 3rd bag without any fee, so I'll check my empty laptop case unless I'm told I can take it.

Most airlines are usually about $1500. I recently booked Air New Zealand Brisbane > Vancouver for May for about $1150. Air NZ is rated four stars on http://www.airlinequality.com, and is a nicer airline than Qantas, and especially United or Air Canada. Plus you can do a stopover in sheephumper land, which is a hell of a nice place.

Depending your destination... Qantas is fastest to Brisbane, you can fly YYC to LAX to BNE direct (or SYD, not sure about MEL). Air Canada goes direct to SYD ex YVR. Air NZ goes YVR > AKL > your choice in Aus.

Don't fly Air Canada unless you don't really need your luggage anyway.

Looking for the cheap flights anywhere around July 22nd.

I'm gonna have six weeks off so I'd like to go do something. Suggestions are welcome.

Ideally anything like the $350 to Tokyo or $150 to Menorca that popped up last summer would be cool.

Yes that would be ideal Hopefully the travel gods will be as kind in 2010.

Too early for July deals I'm afraid. If there are any, they likely won't show up until at least May.

July/August are the peak travel months for Europe. Everything is at it's most expensive, and most crowded, including flights.

In South America it's winter (skiing in Argentina or Chile).

Any interest in Alaska? Would love to do a road-trip there one summer.

Cmyden, have a question for you.

Looking at mexico trips in May and right now on all the canadian websites (Expedia, escapes) there are no Westjet cancun bound flights, but when I search Expedia.com, Hotwire.com or the ITA website you provided I can find westjet flights.

They even list departure times and flight numbers, and reason why there would be a difference?

looking at May 15th to May 22nd

Air Transat has a flight Feb 3 to 10 into Gatwick for $620 USD after taxes. Feb 3 to 13 for $668. There's also Jan 27 - Feb 6 for $572.

Only time will tell if they'll be dropping it to $520 USD like their January flights.

I can see May 15 to 22, YYC to CUN on Expedia.ca ($640 CDN)

Are you sure you selected that exact date ? Because WestJet has some days where they don't fly in May to Cancun (Thursday's, Fridays, Mondays)

Ah interesting, I see what you mean. If you try to select a date in May on WestJet.ca it says 'Service ends at the end of April' but try this...

Select dates in April, and then use the arrows to move the dates ahead one week at a time into May, and you can see the flights.

I think WestJet recently extended their seasonal service for some flights? Maybe this is just a glitch.

negative ghost rider.... I am at the YYC right now .. They made us take everything but laptop and power cord out of the bag and check it or leave it . They let me keep my insulin. If you have books or magazines you have to physically take them out of your bag and carry them. They said you cant access your laptop bag at any time dring the flight and I cant watch my laptop ( for dvds) either. ( Flying with continental )

Haha that's interesting. The security should be the same no matter what airline you are flying. I guess it depends on the security person you deal with? I flew United and was able to put things in my laptop bag such as cameras, medicine, power cords etc. which are all allowed to be taken on board but also brought a dvd and a book. Also, at the beginning of the flight the captain announced that during the last 1 hr of the flight no one would be able to use electronics or get up to use the washroom, however, when I woke up from my sleep with 20 minutes to go I still had my Ipod playing and people were moving about the cabin. It seems all pretty discretionary depending on who you have to deal with.
