Just imagine what they could do with more picks. The amateur scouting is the strength of the org. They need to play into that not against it

That sounds about right. I don’t have the Athletic but nobody hits on picks at a consistently high level like the Flames amateur scouts.

My rankings had the Flames 4th behind Carolina, Tampa and Dallas. Eiher way, people who claim the Flames are terrible at drafing clearly haven't actually looked into it

I’m glad there is a source on this now. Some people still think the drafting is garbage because of the Sutter years.

That's to be expected. Some people still think the Oilers are Cup favourites because of the Sather years.

If the sale happens, next year isn’t that grim, at least up front:
Zary-Kadri-Pospisil
Huberdeau-Backlund-Coleman
Dube-Coronato-Sharangovich
Duehr-Ruzicka-Greer. And they need to make a top 9 spot for Pelletier.

You do have Kadri twice.
If the sale happens, and I hope it does, next year they'll probably suck too and that's okay.

Doubleshifting Kadri!
I’ve been saying this frequently, it won’t be a full rebuild but more of a retool. We have solid prospects that are playing and vets that are locked up medium to long term.

It was interesting to note they mentioned the Flames had the second fewest picks during this timeframe.

with how Sharangovich, Zary and Pospisil have turned out and Coronato/Pelletier/Wolf ready to jump in, a retool is definitely the way to go.
It will mostly be just rebuilding the blue line with the departures of Tanev and Zadorov. I still think we re-sign Hanifin.

The only issue is the lineup doesn’t have anyone close to elite, unless Huberdeau gets back to over PPG again. It will be a good team but not really a top team. That is, unless they can really mine the picks they get in the trades (which will include firsts but not high ones).

Yupy, still no true elite talent, and you do that through the draft. The good thing is they have some excellent pieces to build around that player, if and when they get it

You have to hope for one to break out, or Honzek. I wouldn't count out Zary or Coronato to turn into a legit top line player.
And if one of those players turns out to be elite, its going to be Wolf that will have the biggest impact.

We have a few NHL calibre defensemen still on the wranglers.
But it’s going to to grim in the minors next season with so many graduations.
Better enjoy the Wranglers this season.

There's some other interesting items in there
+18 hit rate for top 10 picks
-11 hit rate for 1st round picks
-1 hit rate for 2nd round picks
+32 for mid draft
+3 for late round
So basically they have been really good with the few top 10 picks they've had + elite with mid round picks.
They've struggled with mid to late first round picks: though encouraging signs lately with the likes of Zary, Pelletier and Coronato.
In contrast Dallas is #1 because their hit rate in the 2nd round is elite (+26).

Gee willikers, I think what you're contending is that an inconsistent goalie on the wrong side of 30, who is the *checks notes* fifth highest paid active goalie in the NHL, would be much more enticing as a tradeable asset if the team currently holding his rights retained some of his cap hit.
That's exactly what I'm contending, Jay. I'll come clean: I don't really believe Jordan Binnington is an objectively better goalie than Jacob Markstrom. I only said so to elicit further comparison, and let others figure out for themselves that Markstrom is a thoroughly mediocre goaltending option (just like Binnington) and there would be few suitors for a trade.
ComixZone's assessment was bang-on, all along, and people arguing otherwise are deluding themselves.
