Two big assumptions. Which make easy pretty hard.
There will be 10 teams where the team doesn't have to ask him, one has to assume Seattle is one of them. and cap space shouldn't be a big deal for Seattle next year.

I feel like if Lucic doesn't want to be traded, it won't be hard for him to find 10 teams that can't afford him

Yeah it all depends on the relationship. Players hook teams like this all the time… it’s why Kadri had Calgary down (didn’t want to leave, and Calgary was desperate for a centre).

Pretty easy first 6 where they can't afford you but it wouldn't suck to end up there:
TBL
FLA
VGK
TOR
PIT
COL

Fill it out with more teams along those lines:
BOS
WAS
STL
MIN

and/or places that might afford you but wouldn't suck for hockey or life like LAK/ANA/NAS/DAL

Big Z, having enjoyed his teammates and role on a team where he finally felt like he was part of the group, shocks by signing for 5 at 4.35!

Gotta have Big Z back. Better with him than with Kylington and Hanifin.

I'd do this in a heartbeat.

Have him back in a heartbeat. Tough, slogged the most minutes a couple games with Tanev out, seems like a great character and teammate (and 1h long YouTube interview was fascinating). Solid and dependable all season, miles ahead of many posters expectations here. And, Sutter trusted him all season and in all situations, which is the biggest compliment.

Has to be some reason he was fine with one year deals, and although he wants to settle, I think this season over most in the last 2, he’d be due for a bigger raise and more term, so we will see.

Depends on the cap hit he is expecting. He just turned 27 last month, so if the cap hit is around 4.25 million, he has shown to be a decent 4/5 D-Man, who has decent speed and offensive instincts as well.

Guys like Z are interesting. Is it smarter for him to take as much money as he can get and sign for say 6 years at 5.5-6 per year? All players will gamble on themselves to become better, but if he doesn't, does he become an anchor with a high contract in 3 years time, bought out and out of the league in 4? Would it be smarter, to sign a deal where he isn't vastly overpaid if he doesn't become a Top 4 guy? But at the lower contract, likely keeps him in the lineup if he stabilizes as a very good number 5 who can sub in as a number 4 temporarily?

I said it in the Gudbranson thread that both he and Zadorov would be wise to do what they can to try to re-sign here, as neither will look near as good playing on a team not coached by Sutter. Zadorov will likely be too expensive, but I feel EG was much more steady and solid than Z anyway. My bet is that EG re-signs, Z goes elsewhere.

Better chance Kane re-signs in Edmonton than Zadorov re-signing in Calgary. I think it was always a foregone conclusion that this was a one year thing when they traded for him. The cap space just isn't there to pay a 3rd pairing defenseman over $4 million. He and Gudbranson were top 25 sheltered defensemen this season so while they are good in their role, their role is 3rd pairing and you can't overpay for bottom half roster depth.

I don't see the benefit of keeping him around for a 3rd live role. Cost too much, Mackey is on a one way contact and Stone will sign as the 7th D.

If he can get 6 years from some sucker at $5.5-$6M, he should take it and run to the nearest bank LOL.

Players should generally take as much money as they can, they are no different than you or me.

He’s always better off locking down as much money for as long as he can. Being bought out as a boat anchor and out of the league in 4 years nets him say 20 million in Salary plus 6 million in buy out. If he is the same player but signing a lower contract say 4mil per he could play for 6 years and still make less. Take the money. The only way he would lose is if he thinks he can become a 1st pairing D.

He should take the 2nd pair money and run.

Look at Glencross for example.

I like the person, but I would likely move on from the player. He didn’t look too good with increased responsibility, and he leaves a lot of the puck retrieval in the corners to his partner. He has a good stick, and he is decent at clearing the front of the net. Denying zone entry and hitting are his forte. However, he really had trouble against the cycle game where he would miss his assignment, and give the other team some grade A chances.

The deciding factor for me was that he doesn’t seem to have chemistry with any of the D aside from Gudbranson. His play make it seem as though his partner and centre have to work a lot harder with him on the ice. If he’s getting paid anything above $2.5M he is a luxury this team can’t afford.

Yeah you guys are obviously right and it's simple math, but I was just thinking if the guy wanted to stick in the league, he might go the other route.
