Here’s an apparently unpopular opinion:

Invalidating the Flames 33 wins before the All Star break to fit your ridiculous narrative that this team is bad is silly and criticizing fans for being optimistic given the fact that we had a great year last year with a similar start to the season is lame. Get over yourself.

I'm not sure where to put this... https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/do-the-...loying~1817688

Interesting stats re: Off Zone Time, Dump In Rate, and lack of production from the Hanifin - Hamonic pairing.

This would lead potential unpopular opinions of ...

1. Poor coaching strategy
2. 2nd pairing needing to be split up, or one of them moved.

Hamonic has been pretty awful since he got to Calgary. He seems like a nice guy but he’s just not a good defenceman.

Absolutely true, however I wish we weren't one of the 25 soooo many years.

I'm kind of reevaluating who I think the core of this team is, and it's all coming up Milhouse.... er, defensemen.

Gio
Hanafin
Valimaki
Kylington
Andersson

Tkachuk
Lindholm

and Monahan gets extra points for being a glue guy. But I'm warming to Johnny moving to Philly, and I feel pretty bad about that. Literally everyone else is looking like filler to me.

I exclude prospects. Horde prospects.

Honestly Bennett not panning out really ####ed everything up with the potential of the roster in this window. Monahan isn't the type of player to carry the team, and Gaudreau is too small/weak to be able to do it himself. Johnny is great, but he can be a complimentary player at most for a team that's gonna make noise.

We're gonna really find out what this team is made out of here. This may be the season/off season that you strongly do consider trading Gaudreau and/or Monahan since they aren't the pieces for a championship team, and need to make moves to draw in players that will be down the road.

Hopefully it doesn't come to that, and the top players on the team start actually performing like they did in the first half of last season. Lindholm can't be the only one, and Tkachuk is gonna have the prototypical 'off season' following the training camp holdout. (Although points wise, he hasn't been that bad)

This is a very real issue. If Bennett had become half the player many had hoped, this team would be a juggernaut.

On the flip side, did anyone foresee how valuable Lindholm would become? So maybe it evens out.

Yeah, this and Tkachuk
Can't ignore huge home runs with two players and say had Bennett been...
Some you win and some not.

I think half the problem with Bennett is that he knows this.

I feel like this is an astute observation. Sam has the look of a guy trying to prove his worth instead of merely competing every shift. Everything he does these days looks forced, and for him the concept of "less is more," could go a long way towards increasing his production. I'm strictly a pro Bennett guy, and I believe his fire ignited the team's success last year, but he has to play better in space and let the game come to him at times instead of trying to alter the course of every shift.

He's going to figure it out, but the crowd who call his on ice decisions into question aren't wrong. Sam needs a bit more Monahan in his game, and Monahan needs a bit of Sam's to his own. I see Monahan taking those strides this year. Bennett needs to follow suit.

Johnny for Hall(with an extension in place) or Johnny+ for Couturier are really interesting to consider.... Couturier would solve a lot of problems for this team and would allow Tkachuk to move to the top line.

Johnny+ for Couturier?

Uhh no. More like Couturier+ for Gaudreau.

You’re aware Gaudreau had 99 pts last year right? If you asked 10 people who they would rather have, 10 people are telling you Gaudreau. It’s not debatable so please don’t bother.

Weird valuation here.

So as rental Hall is worth a first, prospect and maybe a roster player. He signs before the trade and now he is worth a superstar in his prime?

Couturier for Gaudreau one for one maybe but then again I think the Flyers add.

I agree Philly would have to add, but the cap savings in a Johnny for Couturier swap would leave them with plenty of space to sign Hall (and probably Brodie actually) and have 2 really fun seasons.

Johnny and Monahan may get a great return. And they may not be the guys to lead this team to the promise land. But the odds of getting their production back for the $ they make is nearly 0. If we need a different top end player to win I think we have to acquire them in a different way. Pts/$ those guys are both incredibly valuable.

Disclaimer 1: “we”= the Calgary Flames. I’m just one of those fans
Disclaimer 2: I’m neither advocating or poo-pooing trading these guys, just pointing out their favourable contracts

To be crystal clear I would be looking to trade Johnny now myself personally.

1. My opinion but extremely unlikely he re-signs in Calgary. I’d give it a sub 5% chance.

2. Not a leader. Look to body language, overall pout factor is through the roof, and when you hear 300 rumours about him there’s probably smoke to the fire. When we hear so much complaining about the refs, I think it’s because basically the refs hate our guys and mainly Gaudreau for spending his time whining so much.

3. Can’t win in playoffs with him.

4. Value has never been higher and likely will never be higher. Time to sell high for a change rather than Iginla it again.

So you look now, and you look for a kings ransom. This team needs to rebuild. As good as they are, they don’t have it. This core doesn’t have it.

You are aware that centers have more value than wingers right? 99 points is meaningless if you disappear in the playoffs, 10/10 people will take the player that helps them win in the playoffs rather than flashy regular season stats. If you get offered Couturier for Johnny + a pick you take it and run, it’s not debatable so don’t bother.
