Did Chicago do it with Toews and someone else?
Do we have to go all the way back to Malkin/Crosby?

You think we should christen Sam as Taz now? :P

To be fair, there are rumors that the oilers are extremely high on a lot of things ...

I wonder just how happy Bennett is that he was drafted by the Flames as opposed to the Oilers. He's probably just over the moon ecstatic.

So:
How does Bennett compare to Monahan? I see Monahan as a smart, two-way player with really good offensive upside.
Is Bennett in that groove? Or is he flashier?
|
Totally different players.
Monahan is smart, steady, responsible, clutch, and just solid but usually unspectacular all around. I think of him as a better Daymond Langkow type.
Bennett is basically what Theo Fleury would have been if he'd been a bigger guy. Aggressive, determined, fiery, flashy, and fast. He's the only guy I can see challenging Gaudreau in terms of speed plus vision. I think they could be PPG linemates within 2 seasons.

So basically they are perfect #1 and #2 centres?

I think we're looking pretty stable at left handed D too. Only really need two or three of the ~eleven D prospects we've got to pan out any time soon and I suspect that there's a lot more NHL level talent there than meets the eye.
...The real hole is a puck moving right shot or two for the power play.

So we bring up Bennett with 8 games to go in the regular season?

To go with Backlund, who is a perfect 3C.
Seriously, the Flames' centre depth looks pretty good.

Wow, I'm not sure why people are calling Monahan a second line centre....and I really don't get the comparison to Langkow at all. The kid still reminds me of a Toews lite kind of player with potential to get better (not better than Towes, just better than he is now). Langkow seemed like a guy who got better because of his wingers while Monahan looks like he makes his line mates better.
I think Monahan and Bennett are 2 different players but I think they're both going to be legit top line centres. They may not be generational talents but I think they'll be considered one of the best tandems in the league in 5 years or so.

Yeah I'd say Monahan is a different type of player, and is already better than Langkow really ever was. And he's 20. Not much comparison outside that they are both hockey players who played C for the Flames.

I think the comparison to Langkow was just the 2 way center thing. It's not a great comparison though I wouldn't get stuck on it.

Really bizarre. Sure it's not the first time we have heard a team is rumored to be in love with a certain prospect but has ether ever been a non-first overall pick that was so telegraphed? Their own website had him indicated as Oilers property before the kid was even eligible to be picked by an NHL team and leaks all around that the Oilers were set on him for months.

I wonder if the Flames will bring in Bennett right away as a centre or start him at wing for a year? I'm sure he'll start out sheltered but when he develops and can take a top six role having two big scoring lines plus a Backlund line will be huge.

In the Oiler's defense, it's become tradition to follow the top 5 or so prospects on their website because they know they are going to get them. Draisaitl was the only extremely highly touted undrafted prospect to play in the World Championships. Fiala, drafted 11th overall, also played.
I would bet that if Ekblad, Reinhart or Bennett had played they would have had them listed as well.
