Have to agree. That episode kind of killed a lot of the momentum for me. It's leaning too heavily into the supernatural elements. I still maintain that this might be an effect of the town being poisoned, and we are just seeing the townspeople's perspective. However, when you've got comatose people going full poltergeist it's a bit much. It worked better when people were seeing figures in the distance.

Was this created during the writers strike?
Did some middle school drama club win a contest to write this?
How many phone calls can chief get in a one hour episode that are 'chief, you gotta see this'.
Love the setting and the premise, but this is a huge fail.
Not even Foster can save this ####.

Yea, they definitely went a little over the top in that episode with the supernatural element. Other than that I'm still enjoying it overall, and I'm really liking the main characters.

Only 3 episodes left though, so they'd better start moving things along a little quicker in terms of the plot.

Lol. I can see some middle school aged kids, who don't actually know anything about sex or relationships, writing some of the dialogue. The exchanges between Danvers and her co-workers about her love life were just bizarre. That would never happen in real life. The supernatural stuff, the vet comparing the bodies to frozen cariboo, the characters giving their backstories via exposition, etc.. just really cheesy.

I really like the first two episodes. This is a show that runs on mystery and ambience. They really need to get back to that.

I guess my biggest problem with this episode is that nothing really happened. We're pretty much at the same point we were at at the end of episode 2.

I don't think that's really acceptable for a 6 episode season.

I'm going to go back and re-watch the first 3 episodes as it need 110% of your attention... hasn't kept my attention very well so far.

yeah I think thats a fair assessment, I felt like things were ramping up quite nicely at the end of episode 2, and then last night -sure some perfectly important backstory stuff gets flushed out but momentum sort of lost (with then more kind of high energy stuff right at the tail end)

anyways at this point I'm all in and I'll keep watching, but with 50% behind us hopefully the pace accelerates a little here

I wanted to like this show so much but it isn’t even boring it’s nothing. I don’t care about the characters, their motivations, their names, anything. And the writing? Woof. I’m sure someone out there liked it but damned if it keeps my attention in the slightest. 3 episodes in and we’ve established absolutely F all.

Season 2 was more interesting.

Thought plenty happened in ep 3. To quote Jack Reacher, "in any investigation, details matter"

Cover up from the old police chief, railroading Annie murder investigation, mistrust of the police by the inuk as they're just Patty's for the mine because it keeps the lights on for the town.

The black water and pollution coming more into focus over 3 episodes.

The dude was super emotional about hearing that his scientist buddies all died.

"She" is the biggest mystery of all. And why did Annie go all the way out to some ice cave on the tundra?

The cousin veterinarian giving some good clues about the group body-cicle..

See it hasn’t been mentioned yet, but closed captioning reveals something that might have been missed otherwise- the Wheeler murder/suicide guy was whistling “twist & shout” when they storm in on him- I don’t think I would have made it out without CC saying what it was. I don’t think they said a date of that scene, but it must have been some years before the first episode.

And “twist & shout” was also the faint music playing when Danvers is putting the turkey in the fridge. Not sure how this song will circle back to the initial incident, but presumably it will.

But ya, this episode was a bit of a miss for me- with the exception of the last minute. Don’t mind a possible supernatural twist.

Oh, and virtually no advancement on a possible Cohle/Tuttle/S1 tie in.

I turned on CC after being unable to understand a word Peter was saying. For some reason everything he says just seems like a mumble. But yes, I was thinking the exact same thing about the twist and shout. It was a pretty decently sized plot point and zero chance I would have caught it without CC.

Anyways, I feel like I'm beating up on the show too much. It was a great show until this episode. Even the first season missed on a few scenes itself.

I think the beating up is warranted. Setting works. Cast works. Dialog, writing and pace have all been off.

Not a good instalment of TD so far.

Does every season of True Detective include at least one incident where the detectives just shoot and kill a perp? I forget if that happened in S2, but it seems like a theme throughout the seasons with the unceremonious killing and subsequent coverup.

Re-watched the first 3 episodes and still confused as to everything that's going on and who's each characters parent/love interest/etc. LOL

Without summaries online I'd be totally hooped following along. Too many names and relatives to keep track of.

What confused me the most about the relations was the fact they keep showing random characters at home together, to emphasize what a small town it is. For example, I had no idea why Danvers daughter was hanging out at Peter's home, immediately after Danvers had told Peter he had to work late. Turns out, just because it's a small town and the daughter is friends with the wife.

Yea, Danvers walking into Peter's house unannounced was weird... then cussing out the granny lady. WTF is going on!

So watched Season 2 over a two week period, was much worse than expected.

As for this season, I can’t make it from week to week as I totally forget the plot and can’t remember one character from the next. Thought about waiting to binge watch but from the two episodes I’ve seen so far I’m completely underwhelmed.

So the consensus for this franchise seems to be an excellent Season 1 and crap ever since.

Season 3 was pretty terrific IMO. Season 1 is a tough act to follow and it'll likely never be topped. But I thought 3 was a solid bounce-back from 2, which I agree was awful.

I'm enjoying the new one so far, and I like the eerie X-Files vibe. But I'm waiting to see how these last 3 episodes play out before I give a final verdict.
