The thing I love about Monohan is he is sneaky good getting into or creating scoring chances. It seems that when ever he does get a shot it is from a decent scoring area. He just has that uncanny nose for being in the right spot.
Monahan's season is currently the 10th best goal scoring season of all-time using adjusted stats (pro-rated and adjusted to compare across eras). Is there anything this kid cannot do? Crosby better back the Fata up
Seems like a just reward for the flames to get such a great player like Monahan after not tanking at the end of last season like all the other teams that finished below them.
Quoted for truth. I was one of those vocal guys all summer who complained nonstop about how Carolina, TB, etc out-tanked us. I wanted to kill Bégin for randomly scoring 2 goals. I wanted Feaster to trade up to get us in the top 4 at the draft.
But the lord works is mysterious ways. We couldn't have asked for a more mature, all-round player then Monahan. The kid is playing like a 10 year vet. He makes others around him better. He plays with heart and plays a team game. Mark my words, ending up with the 6th pick in the draft will be the best thing to happen to Calgary in years. It's still early, but I think we might have found our #1 center/franchise player.
So please keep that in mind before we go overboard and start proclaiming Sean as Connor McDavid quality here, and this is coming from a guy who has a Monahan jersey on the way, not hating on Sean at all, he's amazing too... but McDavid is on another level.
Don't know why we have to compare Monohan to the other draftees. Both are really good hockey players. One thing for certain, we can probably put to bed that silly comparisons based on draft position (we are only drafting 6th so we will be getting a Gagner type player). I think in any other draft Monohan would definitely would have been drafted higher.
I know it is early, but all signs are pointing to a potential elite player. It makes it that much sweeter when you hear how much Edmonton was spurned by not be able to get him.
I have seen several of Colorado's games and I would say that Monahan has outplayed him so far.
(But I am not going to try and make the case that one player is better than the other after 8 games, or jump on the hyperbole train, I'm just responding to the point being discussed)
I'm sure Crosby would have done that to 99% of the league, it was an amzing move. If Butler did something like that to MacKinnon it would be a different story. That belongs in the Crosby appreciation thread.
I think Monahan is better defensively thatn MacKinnon though but offensively I think I'd give the edge to MacKinnon.

Mahonen's intermission interview left me a bit puzzled.
No canned bs responses, no big unwarranted grin. Calmly and firmly talked about what they needed to do and how they needed to do it. Perhaps unaware, he challenged his teammates and talked with the authority of someone intent on following through (and pushing his teammates to do the same).
I was puzzled, because as he walked away, I noticed he wasn't wearing the 'C'. I could have sworn I was listening to a hybrid of E. Staal and Joe Sakic, detailing the demands they would place on their teammates.
Goddamn, Monahan is awesome.

Thanked your post, but who is Mahonen? Do you have runaway autocorrect?
I think a case for Monahan’s equality to MacKinnon can be made and his play these past few weeks for the Flames certainly strengthens it. Not saying he’s better, but a case can be made that he’s just as good. Of course then I may be biased as I’ve seen a lot more of Money’s play than I have of Mackinnon.
Anyways….
Monahan WAS drafted in 6th place, but was that because he was the 6th best player in the draft or because he had the misfortune to play for the sad sack Ottawa 67s who had a win % of 27.9?
Mackinnon was drafted #1. Was that because he was the best player in the draft or because he had the advantage of playing on the Memorial Cup champion Halifax Mooseheads which has a win % of 88.2?
Monahan scored 31 goals and the whole team only scored 208 goals. That means he scored approx. 15% of the teams goals.
MacKinnon scored 32 goals BUT the whole team scored 347 goals. That’s 9% of the team’s goals.
Its pretty obvious that MacKinnon had way more help getting where he is than Monahan had. Monahan virtually had to carry his team on his back.
