I did not realize that he was that old.. I had him pegged in his early 30's.
Interesting..

In one of those linked articles, GMMR was a little flippant on whether Sam's boat ride would be included in the series. I guess we could surmise that this arc isn't overly important to the overall direction of the books.

Or he could just cut to Sam in Oldtown. The boat ride was long and really didn't matter to the story, whereas I think Sam becoming a Maester will be an important plot point
The talk in the GoT thread about doing a Roberts Rebellion mini series had me drooling over this scene played out:
Protecting John Targaryen!

Clicked your link rayne008, got the following message:

nevermind, skipped over that part. That speculation isn't exactly shocking. I've only read 3 1/2 of the books thus far, and it hasn't come up, but that is what I figured about that.

pretty sure Martin has hinted in interviews that the fan speculation is in fact true, and I have to think there is a big reason they left this out of the series despite it being the most awesome scene in the books.

A fan made video of a dream scene the TV show omitted but is in the books.
One quick warning to those who read the books or just watch the tv show, this video contains a massive speculative spoiler (despite the video taking place in the first book). It is speculative because the dream isn't conclusive, but fans feel they have figured out a major plot twist (yet to be confirmed in the books, but all but sure). Just watching the video may not give it away, as you have to think about it.
For those who read the book, it may still be a spoiler due to the nature of how some of us read, somethings the truth is missed in plain site. When a narrator reads the words, items we should have caught reading, maybe easier to see. This may ruin the plot twist for you if you didn't catch it and think about it when you were reading. This is, assuming all the fans are right.
Lastly, the video doesn't clearly say what plot twist they are revealing, and it is hard to say how obvious it is, already knowing what they are getting at, however the video description and youtube comments all clearly say the speculative plot twist.
It's funny, because this speculation has been at the core of book fandom since forever, it seems. Whereas the question and issue has probably been forgotten by people who only watch the show.
Which is why I think the whole Tower of Joy thing was left out of the series.. or at least I can't remember it being in there.
It had the makings of an epic scene for a flash back. But pretty much everyone has just come to accept the fact he is Neds ####### as other people have #######s and a big deal is not made about them. I also think that is why they are shifting the Gendry story a bit to draw focus on to that theme without the focus being on Jon.

They agreed early on that the best course of action was not to do flashbacks of any type. Perhaps the biggest omission was the Tower of Joy but I feel like the show was far more heavy handed in Jon Snow's heritage. When Jon went to the Wall and Eddard was going to King's Landing he was like next time we meet we'll talk about your mother. That was a pretty big "Hey guys, Jon Snow might have something special about his heritage here" clue. But then it was just pretty much left there and neither Rhaegar or Lyanna were talked about much at all.
Also about Christina Hendricks, I'm sure it's not a unique opinion but I think she would be good as Septa Lemore. I know her from Firefly more than anything and she was good at playing that two faced role as a coy young naive virgin when she was really a con artist. I think that parallels Lemore's ambiguous identity quite a bit.
