I watched Dumb Money yesterday, the film that detailed the Game Stop stock craze. Such a cool and interesting story overall that I was familiar with but didn't fully understand the details of how it started. It has a bit of the same vibe that The Big Short did, but this was a much more human story. The director takes the time to understand the various characters so that we feel invested in the story. Paul Dano gives an authentic performance and leads the ensemble. Pete Davidson is pretty spot on in his limited role. The film suffers from being a little scattered and uneven at times, but overall is a very enjoyable film.
8/10. Would recommend.
I was still brand new into stock trading and holding a lot of blackberry and AMC at the time that this went down. Everyone was scrambling to try to grab the meme stocks on short notice before they blew up (which you can never do) and I just woke up the next morning and watched my $300-$400 explode to $6000. What a fun day.
I liked dumb money, but I think there is an extent to which it was dangerous messaging, they framed the story around a bunch of people who got in at $10 or less who made out anywhere from great to OK, without a mention of the people who couldn't afford it but bought in at $200+ and are sitting $16 stocks. There should have been at least 2 or 3 characters in that movie that were completely ruined by it just for an honest recollection of the event.
Watched 2 great horror movies to start off Halloween season. The first is the South Korean horror film Gonjiam Haunted Asylum. The story is about a group of YouTubers going into a supposedly haunted Asylum and then all hell breaks loose, it's been a while since a movie got to me like this one.
The 2nd one was William Friedkins Bug. It stars Ashley Judd who is a woman on hard times living in a hotel room alone until Michael Shannon enters the picture. Shannon starts to believe he is being eaten by bugs who have infested the room. The movie was made after 9/11 and was made to show how misinformation can spread so quickly. Sadly in a post Covid world this movie is more relevant than ever.

They remade it into a TV series a few years back starring Freddie Stroma (Vigilante from Peacemaker). I thought it was decent but it lasted like 2 eps.

You just got into stocks, before meme investing, and those were the stocks you picked?

Trying to remember, did America Ferrara's character lose everything?
Have to agree though, the filmmakers didn't let the truth get in the way of a good story. Not unlike friends who brag about making out big on stock but fail to mention the thousands they lose on a regular basis.
Texas Chainsaw 3D is in the so bad it's good category. I can't deny I had fun watching it and it had 1 or 2 decent jump scares, but wow is the script bad (do your thing cuz) and the special effects haven't aged well in only 10 years. Also who thought it was a good idea to turn the Sawyer family into the good guys?

I'm actually shocked to find out there were that many of TCM films.
I thought there were maybe 2 of them, plus a remake.

TCM 2 deserves WAY more love. Dennis Hopper was clearly on glue while filming and Chop Top( brother of Leatherface) had some of the best lines in cinematic history.
I may have watched this movie more than 20 times.

I really liked 2, and was debating between that and The Beginning for 3rd place. 2 is absolutely insane and has crazy visuals and dialogue and is really fun, but I don't find it all that scary. It's very much in the Gremlins 2 vein of doing something completely different from the original. The top 4 films on my list are a tier above the rest IMO.

I may have found a movie with Denzel's kid that I like, "The Creator" was unique and I really liked a few of the questions and ideas brought forth. It looks great, visually they outperformed the budget.
If you're a Sci-Fi fan, definitely go see it.
Oh, the online reviews that I checked out after the fact all all pretty much positive.

That was one of the most entertaining things to happen in the past decade in my life. lol. I'll have to watch this. I understood what was going on and benefited, but it will be fun to see it dramatized. Tks for the review.

don't know if anyone cares about spoilers for this movie
Spoiler!
I think she started the movie at -$40,000, ended the movie at -$10,000.
I didn't do the research the film makers would have had to have done to make this movie, but there has to be an example of someone who started the who thing at -$20,000 and ended at -$60,000. I think for this genre of film responsible story telling would have included "####ing around with the stock market is dangerous and some people get hurt". But they didn't.
