The way I see it, the Flames traded Mony and a 2025 1st for Kadri. It was very much worth it for the Flames and just so happened to be an excellent trade for the Habs too.

That's what a lot of people say but that's not the reality of it. Kadri was a UFA, any team could sign him without giving up anything except money on the contract.

Not just money, cap space.

That's exactly the thing. No other team that wanted Kadri had the cap space to meet his asking price. By trading away Monahan and a 1st, the Flames gained the cap space to sign Kadri. And they got him for less money than he was reportedly asking for at the start of free agency.
That kind of flexibility is worth major assets on the market.

Just read an Instagram post from The Hockey Writers where they claim that the Maple Leafs (who always seem to be the market for a new goalie), might be interested in Dan Vladar. I'm a bigger Vladar fan than most, so I wouldn't want to see him moved, plus I can't see any players on their roster (other than Nylander, who is too expensive), or in their system that would be of interest. Any thoughts?

Except the whole salary cap thing lol
Flames got the deal done because they were able to clear the space. Obviously nobody was taking Monahan for less.

What if traded for Sean Monahan? Seems to be having a good year.

The only player that would interest me, and who has a cap hit that would work, is Liljegren.
Two up and coming young players that each fill a need for the other team. Both teams feel some pain in the trade. Cap hit works.
For the Flames, no way they move Vladar, because they aren't going to have to rely on an unproven kid in net, in a year where they think they are contenders. However, acquiring Liljegren gives them options defensively, to move someone else out for a forward.
For the Leafs, they need a goalie. Gotta sacrifice something to get it done.

How about this?
Nylander ($2.5M retained) + Liljegren for Hanifin + Vladar
cap hit is equal

d_phaneuf: Leafs need a goalie and know it. They are top-heavy and need to improve their D and goaltending. This does that.
And it makes the Leafs a better team

Leafs say no. The Flames get the best and third-best players in that deal.

Flames aren’t trading Vladar. If Markstrom gets hurt it’s season over.

Vladar is currently better than Liljegren, though that may not continue going forward.
Nylander is arguably a better player than Hanifin, but as a one-dimensional scoring winger, I don't think he is much more valuable, if at all.
Straight up, I wouldn't trade Hanifin for Nylander.
