Hoping courses are opening in the next month. I've done a lot of indoor golf over the winter but it just isn't the same as golfing outdoors.

I'm also looking to upgrade my clubs this year if anyone has any suggestions.

I’m really intrigued at the comment about better decent angle, what’s better steeper? What’s the spin rate difference, should be better with an iron no?

I play around a 6 HCP, and most my golf buddies are in around the same. There’s a few with simulators, and I find that now everyone is so stuck in the data, that they are spending thousands of dollars on new clubs, balls, grips etc etc based on the data every winter. I’m not sure it actually translates onto the course for the avg golfer, my buddies will still shoot between 72 and 85 on any given day. I feel like the data is being used to sell people on stuff, IMO. I’ve never had a formal lesson, but I feel like that would be the place to start? Or am I out to lunch lol.

A 6 without lessons? Well done sir, I’d say you have to ask yourself what your goal is. You are in the top echelon of amateur golfers with that handicap. The issue is how hard you need to work and want to get to the next level. From all I can gather, getting to scratch is a whole new challenge. A playing lesson might be a very good idea to get a sense from a pro where you can consistently get those 6 strokes and then focus there.

But if you’re happy playing the way you are, the other option is enjoy it! Golfers are a funny lot, never quite satisfied.

Thanks, small town access is a thing. We’ve all been playing since we were 5 and all play 100 rounds a year. Access is key!

I have found the simulator craze good fun! But my buddies equipment spending has been wild. Maybe I’m in trouble this year and they are all going low 🤷#♂️. Better break out the cash on the first tee.

Courses down here in Lethbridge opening this coming Friday the 7th. Coaldale Land O Lakes opened yesterday, although they never really close….

I have a negative AoA and as a result don't hit anything with low loft very high.

This makes it hard to hold greens. Higher apex with steeper decent angle makes the ball stop faster. Spin rates were about the same.

My experience has been that the sim doesn’t really translate to the real thing. Like last year I was playing in the sim and getting really good scores. When it came time to play outside on a real course with real conditions, my scores were no better than the year before. Plus, depending on the sim setup, sometimes you’re forced to alter your swing.

I’d add there are guys who thrive on the data and the science of it all, and get good results with all the launch monitor/sim stuff. There are guys that just play by feel. There are guys who the data is just too much and messes them up. It takes all kinds in this crazy sport.

Funny you say this. I'm not a good golfer but am happy when I shoot mid eighties. For some reason I'm lights out from green side bunkers. And every time I make the shot I wonder to myself how I did it. Straight feel. I would like to go and get the stats for my long irons and 3 wood as that is my main weak point. Can't get the ball in the air with anything more than 6 iron.

That's a fairly common issue and why hybrids replace long and mid irons in the bag for some people. At one point last year (and maybe still the case) Fred Couples' longest iron in his bag was his 7 iron!

After 14 years, Ive decided its time to upgrade clubs. Gotta do everything but putter and wedges. Anyone else go down this road recently?

Prices are insane but I have no interest in demo or used. Seems like getting 1 generation old version of a line might be a good way of saving maybe 20%, with essentially a negligible difference in performance. Example, getting Ping 430 over 440.

Any tips or advice from recent upgraders? I know getting fitted is always the top recommendation, and certainly want to do this, but it probably means paying like 15% over stock prices?

I’d be looking at a few things, my handicap, how much I plan on playing, and where the money could be better spent if I’m not a very low handicap. If you’re a bogey golfer +/- a handful of strokes then year old clubs and some one on one lessons with a pro would probably provide the most benefit.

100%, but there are synergies available here - for example, buy some lessons and have one of those sessions toward the end be for a fitting. You may be able to still get last year's gear ordered, even though the new stuff came out recently. Regardless, the fitting would help you understand what you should be looking at in terms of the range of clubs, shaft flex and length, etc.

Fitting doesn't add to the prices, 100% recommend it.
The cost of the fitting alone is an added cost though.

Buying last years stock if you can find it is a great idea. The G430 vs the G440 for example are pretty much exactly the same.
If you can get a G430 max 10k at a good price, it's incredible for mid/high handicaps.

I did a Titleist fitting when I bought my irons and then went and bought the previous gen T200s. Also bought the G430max late in last season when it was reduced to about $599.
Paying nearly $900 for the new models is a luxury, not a need.

I'd recommend getting a fitting and paying for it.
Then take the specs and go shop last year's models for similar specs.

Anyone ever golf in an air boot?

Weird question but I hurt my foot somewhat seriously (no break) and have a bucket list trip coming up. Wondering how a course would feel about golfing in a boot.

Walking is the most painful… played 18 on the sim without issue. So weird.

I went down a YouTube rabbit hole and ended up watching a bunch of videos about finding gold club deals at pawn shops and other second hand stores. I know there is that Golf Traders store in the south. I'm curious to know if anyone has put any effort into checking out the pawn shops to find some cool clubs and if the deals might be decent in Calgary?

I found a beat up Scotty Cameron at a Goodwill for $5.

Would have cost a pretty penny to refinish it.

Just posting to vent my annual fustration at attempting to book a reasonable tee time in Kananaskis. I'm not sure how fair this fair queue system is.
