You would have to play Lucic and Lewis over Bedard every day of the week...I mean how many rings does Bedard have??

Mike Reilly and Nikita Zaitsev are on waivers today. If either Stone or Tanev are out long term, Calgary might have to find a way to use Kyington's cap hit to claim one of those two defensemen. I would prefer Reilly.

Zaitsev's contract makes him impossible to consider.

Oh for sure, at this point though they need NHL bodies on defence. Mackey, DeSimone and Gilbert are all fine from a game or two, but if its going to be much longer than that they need to find someone who can handle more than 10 mins a night.
Reilly is a legit NHL defensemen and he can play in the top 4 in a pinch.

He could still be on the roster for 30 days and/or play in 10 games before waivers are an issue, so they'd have time to make a decision. If he establishes himself in that time, it opens the door for other options. If he doesn't, send him back on day 29 or after game 9.

If they did what Columbus did with Texier with Kylington they would have the room to make it work.

That closes the door to Kylington returning at all this season though...doesn't seem like the Flames are ready to close that door completely yet.

IDK if that door isn't all that open anyway

Why is Kylington allowed on IR, but not LTIR? I admittedly don't understand the whole injury Reserve thing. Would the Flames not save a lot more cap if he was on LTIR?

Flames could I think - I think they have chosen not to for cap management purposes.
With the way the cap works with daily accrual they would be able to add a $5M player near the deadline.
If they add the player at $5M before the deadline, and then are right against the cap, I think they could then put Kylington on LTIR then and be able to go over the cap by the $2.5M of his salary (potentially allowing them to add another player).
But if they put Kylington on LTIR right now then they couldn't accrue cap space and the max they could exceed the cap by was $2.5M all season.
Flames seem to be doing everything they can to avoid going into LTIR so they can continue to accrue cap.

You can't place non injured players on IR, or LTIR. For that there is what is called the non-roster.
In Article 16 of the CBA:
Quote:
16.12 - Non-Roster Players
A player can be placed on the Non-Roster list for reasons other than injury (birth of a child, attending a funeral), at the Commissioner's approval. His roster spot can be replaced, but the cap hit of both he and his replacement will remain.
|
As for the cap savings, you don't save cap space when you have players on LTIR. You're allowed to exceed the cap by a an amount equal to (LTIR cap hit - Cap space). The Flames started the season with $1.3M in cap space, that would've allowed them to sign a $5M player at the deadline. Had they placed Kylington on LTIR, the Flames would've gained the option to bring in another $2.5M player and exceed the cap by $1.2M, or had they recalled a couple of players before placing Kylington on LTIR and then sent them back to the AHL after, the Flames could've theoretically been able to exceed the cap by $2.5M and had $3.8M in cap space.
