last thing on this from me...as well as Tkachuk has started and as poorly as Huberdeau has played I look at the game tonight and ask myself who would I rather have in the lineup
Tkachuk
or
Huberdeau/Weegar
and its still door #2...with losing Kylington out of nowhere the Flames are lucky they brought in another top four

Sutter's defensive system is being challenged, but more by the current lack of NHL defenders and forwards having trouble adjusting to that than insubordination. IMO

Players are still playing their asses off for the most part....900 or below goaltending and some poor puck luck has this team .500 instead of .700 IMO
They really should have 2 or 3 more wins. losing 3 dmen didn't help either and then there is the hardest strength of schedule in the league. Flames will be fine IMO.

If they were struggling from the first game I would agree - BUT - the team played within a system and were dynamite up to the Buffalo game. Then Sutter starts yapping...look...kudos to the coach for last season, I have no idea what Sutter is like in the room or in practice but grown men will only take so much crap. Now if the team suddenly "forgot" how to play the winning system less than 10 games in then I guess that is the problem or it is something else.

both weegar and huby were good yesterday. if they keep it going it will beat the alternative easily . Tkachuk is playing out of his mind and still alone can't help Florida win

Flames and Sens have lost 6 in a row, Pens have lost 7 and the Blues 8. All these teams expected to compete I wonder if there is a hockey trade to be made with any of these teams?

We need a RH shot first speedy winger.
Maybe Kapanen from Pittsburgh?

Phillips is right there. And free.
Trade isn't happening IMO. Everyone is tight enough to the cap that it would have to be $ in $ out

Phillips would have to be waived to be sent back down could be an issue

What exactly are they saving him for by keeping him in the AHL?

If he shines, they waive Ruzicka. If he doesn't, they were likely to let him walk at year's end anyway

I think it is almost safe to assume that Phillips may not be a "Sutter" type player. There is almost nothing else he can do in the AHL, guy has been lighting it up since like 2019 and hasn't had a legitimate shot.
While Kapanen isnt a super star he is a solid top 9 forward who.is responsible on both ends of the ice, has speed to burn and can chip in at a reasonable rate depending on his ice time and doesn't lack NHL size.
No idea how it would work cap wise but I have given up on Phillips getting a shot, guy has deserved it for years.

We have enough "middle 6" guys. I don't think we need Kapanen. He is essentially just another Dube for us. If we're going to get a forward we need a legit top 6 player (65+ point, 20+ goals.).
I don't think we can afford to give up this year first with the uncertainty of our team meshing and the depth of the draft especially for a player who isn't a legit top line player.
If it isn't a rental at the trade deadline we will have to move money out, probably in the form of a D man. With Zadorov stepping up and Kylington hopefully returning at some point I think we can afford to move Hanifin out for next season.
Also at this point will adding another new face after all the huge changes really make things work better in the short term?
I think you need to go big or do nothing until the offseason and see how it pans out.

Phillips is a UFA at the end of the season no matter what. He'll be moving on unless the Flames guarantee him a spot in the NHL lineup. Might as well see what you have in him right now. If he doesn't cut it and you lose him on waivers, it isn't a big hit for the team to take. It would hurt the Wranglers, but the Flames is the team that matters.

This is all part of the plan. Flames are looking to add Bedard and compete next year.
