I may weight down the netting on the floor so the netting isn't flying and making it hard to collect the balls every time.

Any Winston members here? I see the board approved a new clubhouse.
Here's hoping they fare better than the membership did at Bearspaw.

I ended up doing that. Plus I laid a blanket over the excess netting at the bottom to catch balls. It's been weeks and it's working perfectly with no balls going through the netting. IIRC the total cost of all materials was around 80 dollars to set this up.

I thought they already got a new clubhouse a few years back.

Bearspaw was a fiasco though. As soon as someone mentions a clubhouse around here, someone brings up Bearspaw in response.

I really want to join The Winston but I am waiting another year or two until the clubhouse actually gets built and all the costs are in. It will cost me more but I'd rather see everything done than face a never ending cash call.
Just my personal opinion, but their financing plan is quite aggressive so they can't afford to have the budget blow out. I hope everything goes smoothly and a bunch of people join so they can reinvest into the course as well.

I'd be careful with that idea because when Earl Grey built their clubhouse, they came out with a huge waiting list. I understand that no one wants to pay cash calls, but there's a tradeoff there. Not to mention that you get to golf while the project is being built!

I hear you and I'm not totally in the "this time is different" camp but Earl Grey has always (that I can recall) had a waiting list whereas The Winston only has like 200-250 members (depends which class and how you look at it). They want to get to 400-450 shareholders so it will be great if they can find 200 new members at $25-$35k, but that's a lot for a semi-private course on city owned land. Apparently they're trying to get the same treatment as Earl Grey from the city to convert to more of a private setup but it hasn't happened yet.
The Winston is in much more of a build it and they will come mode than Earl Grey ever has been in my view.

So the oldest part of my set are my irons - a set of TM R7s I bought new almost 20 years ago. I've been checking out used clubs, hoping to find irons in the m4 - sim2 range for around $400. I'm a Taylormade guy and I'm cheap
Anyways, I golfed with a guy last year who had a set of p790s and couldn't stop raving about them. Then my brother-in-law hit some p790s last month and also highly endorsed them. Unfortunately, they go for around $1000 or more used, so I never considered them...
...until I saw a post from a guy who bought knockoff (not counterfeit) p790s off of Temu. He referenced this video as to why he got them:
I found another youtube video with a couple of (I think) ex-college golfers testing them out against real p790s.
Bottom line, they seem to compare really well with the originals. Like so close that they were almost indistinguishable, and likely using very similar manufacturing processes as the original.
My final step was to go to GolfTown and try out the real p790s to see if I liked them. They are more blade than cavity-back irons that I'm used to, so I wanted to see how they'd feel. Honestly, they were incredible - really forgiving, while also being straighter and longer than my r7s. Toe and heel shots still felt good, and travelled about as far as flushing my old club. Pretty incredible.
Anyways, the knockoffs aren't on Temu anymore, but I found them on aliexpress.
I spent a bunch of time wondering if I should get the 4th gen knockoffs (that look like the 2023 p790s) but those all seemed to be more counterfeits than knockoffs. When I messaged the seller for actual picks, they all showed the actual TM logo on them.
In the end, I went for the same set as in the second video above. They are made by Calong, which seems to be a legit club manufacturer. And having them play tested as in the youtube video gives me more confidence in them. And right now, they are on sale for $285 with free shipping. At that price, it seemed well worth the risk.
I expect they will arrive in a month or so, and will test them out at an indoor simulator. Here's hoping!

Had a few buddies members there but let it lapse because you couldn’t get tee times ever. Also got the kids junior memberships there one year. Complete waste of money.

Costco/Kirkland irons are very close to p790 knockoffs too; if you don't want to go full Temu.

I did see the Kirkland irons last time I was at Costco. I think they were going for around $700. A $400 savings is worth the risk.
It was actually reading about the Kirkland irons where someone mentioned the AskGolfNut video I posted above and got me on the p790 knockoffs. I did see that TM was suing Costco over the irons, so the similarities are probably pretty close.

Has anybody taken lessons with Wes Heffernan? He seems to be a very good player. I couldn't get in with him until April but looking forward to get feedback from a different instructor.

I just had a discussion about clubs with a golf buddy yesterday. We are both old and the discussion was mostly about shafts regular or stiff. He's a player and I used to be a player. He switched to regular shafts and I will be this year. He now plays P790's. Obviously great clubs and lowered his score (with help from R shafts). But, expensive. The Ali express knockoff's are tempting.

Anyone here have any suggestions on a pebble beach trip? Things like places to visit or things to do when not golfing. Caddies for sure?
Going this spring and playing:
Pebble x2
Spy Glass
Spanish bay
Staying at the resort.

If there's room in the schedule for a fifth round I'd recommend making the drive to Santa Cruz for Pasatiempo.
But I know of some guys who had a day at Laguna Seca as part of their Monterey golf trip, but I think that was part of a car club thing and the dates for the golf trip were picked around that. Don't know if they have a 'rent a car' type setup to do some laps if that's your thing.
The people I know who worked for Pebble/Spyglass always had pictures of hikes on all the points, groves, and coves in the area on their rare off days. Got the impression that aside from golf and views the options are limited (and places to eat, but they couldn't afford to eat at a lot of them).
For special trips like this I'd say splurge and get the caddie. Not having to haul your own bag will keep you fresher and part of the experience is taking in their tips and knowledge (whether you can use it or not is another matter, but still can feel like a 'pro' for a round).

It’s been a few years since I’ve been in the area, but Bayonet and Blackhorse was a terrific 36 hole facility that was relatively cheap compared to the courses you have on the itinerary. I believe it has also hosted PGA Championship qualifier tournaments in the past. I’ve used those courses as “tune-ups” before playing pebble and couldn’t recommend them enough. They were in great shape every time I’ve played them and golfnow had good deals for around noon back in the day (pre-Covid). If you can fit an extra round there or pasatiempo like roughneck mentioned previously, that would make an already epic trip even more ridiculous.
For first time golfing the pebble resort courses, having caddies may be a good experience. I tried them and they were really helpful with reading greens, in particular, especially due to the significant grain present on the poa greens. I didn’t find they were that helpful on club selection, because the rangefinder did its job. Overall, although the caddies aren’t cheap, it ended up being a positive experience for me on my first visit.
Hope you enjoy this trip, it’s gonna be awesome!
