Nebraska is no longer undiscovered but does still have a semblance of value for some pretty crazy inland links courses.

The Wisconsin sand belt isn’t really out of the box anymore but it’s a pretty crazy spot as well.

A Maritimes trip is pretty good even if Cabot isn’t on the list, but Newfoundland would be even more out of the box.

St. George area of Utah maybe? Cool area.

Definitely Wisconsin. Have a 40th birthday trip coming up in 2026 and that's our top choice right now.

A few thoughts.

Big Cedar Lodge in Missouri. Three must play courses and not that far from Branson.

Crystal Springs Resort in New Jersey. Six courses that are all quite different and fun to play. One of my top ten is at this facility (Ballyowen). Close enough to NYC that you take in the Big Apple.

Reynolds at Lake Oconee in Georgia. I'll give you the full rundown in another month.

Over-priced, over-done, over-rated. The designs are hard enough, but if you have wind, and the winds on that coast can be brutal, the golf courses become unplayable. Better options inland and for less money (Crosswater, Pronghorn, Silvies).

Thanks for posting. It's become one of those youtube / insta courses for me, so happy to give it a miss. I've played an overdone links course on a bad weather day, and it SUCKS.

Friend just got back from Big Cedar and said it was amazing, pricey but worth it. I used to golf in the World Am in Myrtle Beach the week before Labour Day and met some great friends over the 10 years I went if you guys want a competitive golf experience. We now plan a yearly golf trip based on where each other are from (excited for South Africa in 2027). Myrtle has tons a great courses for a good price, but it is humid/hot at that tome of year. Some of my favorites in the Area are : Arrowhead, Thistle G & CC, Prestwick, Grand Dunes, Tidewater, Caledonia

Also tons of Airbnbs and last trip we had a bus take the 16 of us to each course for a very good price. I can get you the name of the shuttle if u end up going there.

Know someone who was at Sand Valley (Wisconsin) recently and they raved about it. Know others who have done different trips to Wisconsin - never heard anything but great things.

Otherwise, the Robert Trent Jones golf trail has some cool options.

At one point in my life, I'd like to play Tobacco Road and would plan a trip around that.

@Lanny or anyone. I'm looking at signing up my son for a junior tournament second week of January at the Raven Club in Phoenix to try to get a nice weather/conditions winter tournament in. Any thoughts on the course or what the weather/conditions will be like in January?

I’ve played the Raven there a few times and it’s a nice track. The last time I played it was several years ago though, so I can’t really give you any up to date information.

I think I’m playing there on Saturday… not much help for January though.

Raven is a solid course, usually in nice shape. In terms of weather, if it's nice it will be in the 70s maybe touching 80. It's going to be 80 tomorrow.

January is the peak of the winter season in terms of conditions. Most courses that have overseeded will be largely grown in and the courses will start lifting CPO restrictions and the courses won't be as wet, so less mud balls.

Had an epic fail today.

Played teeth of the dog in La Romana today. All time course. Go and play it. Go on vacation, bring the kids, ditch the family and go play.

Just don’t forget your phone in the room..

As DoubleK said, The Raven should be in great condition. You'll love it. It is unlike any other course in Phoenix and is very reminiscent of playing in North Carolina in the pine barrens. The course is heavily bunkered around the greens and has a number of risk reward holes. Have your son work on his bunker game, especially on hard and wet sand. The bunkers there are normally suited for the chunk and run game rather than the big high splash, simply because the sand is usually compacted hard and a splash isn't consistently available. A good player can chew the course up if they take what the course gives them and doesn't succumb to trying the hero shot.

Weather in January is going to be chilly in the early mornings, but by 10:00 you should be back in short sleeves. You should not run into any rain, but our weather has been on its head the past couple of years. You should enjoy it, even if it is cold for us, as we don't have the humidity like you do in Virginia and that will make it seem warmer. Enjoy!

Couldn't other people take photos? I'm assuming this is the fail you refer to.

Looks like an awesome course, though... I doubt I'll ever play it except on Trackman.

Playing 18 holes unhinged from your phone is a moment that should be savoured. IMO - especially on vacation.

Don’t disagree. Some photos would have been nice. Played with a couple that didn’t speak English so didn’t communicate much.

I thought it would be nice to have something to hit some balls into during the winter. So I came up with an idea I thought my late father would be proud of. I bought some netting off TEMU and a matt to hit off. To hang the netting I found a wooden curtain dowling in a thrift store for $3.50 and some plastic shower curtain rings to hang the netting onto the dowling. Set it up last night in my furnace room.

Just be careful with that Temu netting, I could see a ball going straight through.
I built a cost effective sim enclosure at my office once using archery netting & steel EMT piping. If you decide to go next level and want any advice, let me know.
