Last time I saw you was probably 10+ years ago and you were crossing the street in front of me and I honked and you were angry. By the catholic school board building. Funny

Thanks! For sure, I don't really look at the number, it's always been about being able to do things that I couldn't before and I've achieved every single goal I'd wanted, even the nice to haves. Being skinny or average weight for my hight was never even a realistic desire so it doesn't bug me.. going down 18 pant sizes is enough

Not stereotyping. Not even about culture. I'm half-Vietnamese and I wouldn't live in Vietnam. I'm too used to western norms. It would be a frustrating place if you had to live there day-to-day. Just simple things like, it's dirty, it's hard to get around, it's hard to get documents, there's no personal space, it's super bureaucratic and corrupt.
4 trips in 12 years and 6 weeks is not living there. Nha Trang might be better as it's not as crowded and not as hot, just avoid all the tourists. Kinda like living off the strip.

“I love Vietnam, I want to retire there.”
“Well I don’t, which means you don’t. Tourist!”
You’re so wacky.

Sorry...
Back on topic. Hot places are also very A/C heavy.
Vietnam as an example, unless you plan to be outside or at home all the time, every building, shopping mall, office, hotel etc.... they jack up the A/C. So you're continually going from hot to cold to hot

How much time have you actually spent there? You sound pretty out of touch. Saigon and Hanoi are awesome cities, no dirtier than most American cities I've visited, with awesome parks and quieter neighborhoods if that's your thing. And hard to get around? Maybe if you have no concept of transportation other than cars, but I've driven in rush hour Saigon on a scooter and it wasn't difficult at all to get where I wanted to go. Plus you can fly between Hanoi-Da Nang-Saigon for like $50, try doing that in Canada. And complaining about corruption is funny when you look at who's running our provincial government. They've been one of the fastest growing economies in the world now for over a decade, so they must be doing something right

Shorts… my legs don’t get cold like my upper body. Shorts and a hoodie I'm good at 7-10 Celsius. Yet if it’s a chinook in Feb I'm still in pants. If it’s April - late October it’s defiance.
Ef you mother nature.

Or maybe living and having close family somewhere gives a different insight into what it’s like to actually live in the country than someone who has vacationed there. Lots of expats who move overseas find the reality very different from what they expected. Buying and renting property, getting insurance, licenses, health care, banking, dealing with bureaucracy etc isn’t stuff you’re going to encounter as a tourist.

Thinking Alberta is comparable to Vietnam when it comes to corruption is incredibly naive. You clearly have no idea what day-to-day corruption is like in much of the world. It means in most interactions with an official - getting a permit, getting utilities hooked up, being assessed a fine or traffic ticket, accessing insurance - you’re expected to bribe the official you’re dealing with. No bribe, no service. Big bribe, faster service.
Transparency International scores Vietnam at 40 (higher is better) in the global corruption index, and the 88th least corrupt country in the world. Canada scores a 75 and ranks 15th for least corruption. The difference is night and day.
I assume you’re just spitballing and aren’t seriously considering moving to Vietnam. Because if you were serious, you certainly wouldn’t want to rely on your experiences as a tourist to inform your decision.

What is with people moving to Vietnam? I had a guy ask me that same question yesterday.
I've never been to Vietnam, dont know what the laws are like, but I understand its a beautiful place. I dont know what it would be like to live there though.
I've been to a lot of places and cities that I've really loved and wanted to stay longer in, but, it may sound corny, I love nothing more than coming home to Calgary.

I met a retired U.S. postal worker who retired in Medellin, Colombia and was absolutely living the dream. Sounded like he was living quite well too, and I can't imagine that pension is all that much...your money goes far there. Pretty active dating life it sounded like too, and if you've ever been there and seen the people, that's a very good thing. Legit life goals..

Oh I'm fully aware, my FIL had to pay a local official to expedite my visa before I got there. But it was a 10-year visa and even with the bribe was significantly less money than what we've had to pay to have her family visit us in Canada. And I also got pulled over on the scooter and got fined for not having an "international drivers permit", which is basically just a tax for white people on scooters. But the fine was under $20 CAD and the cop even gave me a little sticker to put on the scooter so other cops would leave me alone. So yes, there is corruption in all levels of the average Vietnamese citizen's life, but when you look at what we have to pay for official services a lot of the time they still come out ahead

I want to be a corrupt Vietnamese Scooter Cop. That sounds like it'd be a blast.

You get to measure women's breasts

This was proposed in 2008 then scrapped due to public outcry.
